Swimming World Cup Meet 1 : Daejon, Korea -- November 25, 2003

By Russell McKinnon, FINA PRESS bUREAU

DAEJEON, Korea, November 24. THE two-day World Cup (25 Meter Course) swimming meet at the Chung-mu Swimming Pool here proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Ukraine’s Yana Klochkova.

Klochkova won a staggering six gold medals but it was Austria’s Mirna Jukic, as a winner of three golds and a silver, who clocked three of the top five female swims of the meet. Her final swim tonight in the 200m breaststroke gave her 973 points while the fourth and fifth best swims came in the 100m and 50m breaststroke respectively.

Japan’s Mai Nakamura swam the second and third highest scoring races, gaining 970 points for the 100m backstroke and 962 for the 50m backstroke. Klochkova, on the other hand, scored four in the top 13 but her best came in tonight’s 400m freestyle, the sixth best of the meet. By the time she won the 100m IM late in the evening she had slowed considerably but was still dominant.

On the men’s side of the ledger, Germany’s Stefan Herbst was the standout with three golds and one silver.

His fastest swim earned 973 points, the same as Jukic, while he had two others top eight finishes. The best points were earned in the fast 200m freestyle. Next best was Croatian Gordan Kozulj in the 200m backstroke with 964 in what was a fast race.

Slovenian Peter Mankoc with 960 points in the 200m IM, the only gold of his four medals, was the third best. The other medals were all silver. Two swimmers gained two gold medals, the host nation’s Seung Hun You with two great breaststroke wins over world champion Roman Sludnov (RUS) and Germany’s Steffen Driesen in the backstrokes.

Former Arizona State Sun Devil and six-time All-American Bobby Zaabadick (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) earned a gold medal for the United States in the 50m freestyle.

Zaabadick clocked a 22.29 in the 50m free to take home the win and defeat Germany's Stefan Herbst (22.39), who was gunning for his fourth gold medal of the meet. Korea's Chung Hee Lee (22.56) took third. During the two-day meet, the former Sun Devil also competed in the 100m freestyle (50.57) and the 50m butterfly (26.15), finishing eighth in both.

"This is great for Bobby," said Arizona State's Associate Head Swimming Coach Adam Schmitt, the Sun Devils' sprint coach specialist. "For him to represent the US against international competition will really help him to prepare for the Olympic Trials in June. This is a huge step for him."

Zaabadick qualified for the US team by virtue of his silver medal in the 50m freestyle this summer at the US Summer National Championships and his world ranking in the 50 free of 34th, fifth highest among all Americans. He competed for ASU during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons and is fifth all-time in the school record books for the 50-yard freestyle (19.79).

Race recaps:

Men: 200m freestyle:
German Stefan Herbst (1:45.15) came within a sliver of his personal best to win his third gold medal and did it from lane one. Last night he won the 100m IM from the same lane. His coach stated it was not unusual for Herbst to go that slow in prelims. He won easily over Slovenia’s Peter Mankoc (1:46.83) and Brazil’s Rodrigo Castro (1:48.36) and did so with a long lunge into the finish. Herbst’s best is 1:45.04 at the distance. The swim was the best-scoring race of the meet with Herbst scoring 973 points.

100m breaststroke:
Korea’s Seung Hun You (1:00.82) did what he did to Russia’s Roman Sludnov in the 200m breaststroke last night and won gold, giving him two gold and a silver in the discipline here, he had gained the lead at the halfway point and always looked in control of Sludnov (1:01.11). Sweden’s Joakim Niclsen took third in 1:02.38.

100m butterfly:
Russian Igor Marchenko continued the Lane One’s winning lane streak when he eclipsed Korea’s Doo Hee Jeong (53.06) and Uzbekistan’s Ravil Hachaev (53.13). Hachaev led at halfway but he was blown away by Marchenko in one and Jeong in lane seven.

50m backstroke:
Steffen Driesen did Germany proud with a swift 24.44, ahead of Russian Evgueni Alechine (25.30) and Croatian Gordan Kozulj (25.67). Driesen was well ahead at the turn and maintained the momentum until the end.

200m individual medley:
Slovenia’s Peter Mankoc (1:58.90) went to the front early and stayed there for his first gold medal, adding to his two silvers of the first night. While Korea’s Gyu Chul Han edged past Japan’s Taishi Okude for the silver in 1:59.77. Okude touched in 2:01.20.

50m freestyle:
This was to be German Stefan Herbst’s fourth gold medal. However, swimming from his favored lane one, he was touched out by the United States’ Robert Zaabadick (22.29). Herbst was one tenth of second behind with Korea’s Chung Hee Lee (22.56) in third.

1500m freestyle:
The USA’s Justin Mortimer cleaned up the longer distances, adding to his 400m freestyle gold and 400m IM bronze medal. He touched in a dominant 15:09.48, ahead of Koreans Kook In Han (15:29.66) and Min Gyu O (15:30.20).

200m backstroke:
Germany’s Steffen Driesen (1:55.52) missed out on the backstroke hat-trick by half a second to Croatia’s Gordan Kozulj (1:55.02). Russian Evgueni Alechine touched third in 1:56.08 for a silver and two bronzes in the backstroke events.

100m freestyle
Russian Denis Pimankov may have held sway at the halfway mark but German Stefan Herbst slipped through to win in 48.84, just ahead of Slovenian Peter Mankoc, who touched in 49.06. Pimankov finished third in 49.06. The only other swimmer to break 50s was Korean Gung hee Lee.

50m breaststroke
Russian Roman Sludnov made no mistake with a withering burst in the opening lap, which had him clearly ahead. Her touched in 28.08, .32s ahead of local hope Seung Hun You and Slovenian Miha Koren in 28.64.

400m individual medley
Korean Gyu Chul Han turned the 400-strong crowd into a frenzy when he made the breaststroke leg his own, coming from second to lead by two body lengths heading into the freestyle. He increased that lead to four body lengths to take the gold medal in a time of 4:14.02 ahead of Japan’s Taishi Okude in 4:19.60. The United States’ Justin Mortimer was fading but still held out a fast-finishing Hua Zhang Zheng of China to finish in 4:25.93, just five hundredths of a second ahead of Zheng.

100m backstroke
German Steffen Driesen (53.72) just touched out Croatian Gordan Kozulj in (53.76) following a sharp third lap. Driesen used this lap to shake off Russian Evgueni Alechine (53.85) but had to fight hard to shut out Kozulj, who saved his best for the final leg.

200m butterfly
The USA’s Kellan O’Connor (1:57.97), who survived a scare in the morning heats, came through to win from Japan’s Yasutake Takamatsu (1:58.18). The Japanese led from the start to almost the finish as O’Connor crept up in the final stages to snatch the victory. O’Connor was still warming up for his heat when the race was called in the morning. He thought he had time but the previous event, due to another mix-up, was made into a straight final at the last minute and O’Connor had to run the length of the pool to get to the starting block. He qualified third fastest but went more than four seconds faster with a proper preparation. Korea’s Do Hee Jeong was second, missing the win by one hundredth of a second.

400m freestyle
The placegetters at the 300m mark carried through to the end with the USA’s Justin Mortimer claiming gold in 3:50.89 from Korea’s Gyu Chul Han (3:51.06) and well back to Brazil’s Bruno Bonfim in 3:54.78. Han didn’t figure in the opening 200m but was right on Mortimer’s shoulder in the final 150m. This turned the order in the 400IM where Mortimer was third and Han first.

200m breaststroke
Korea’s Seung Hun You caused the upset of the night with a superb victory over Russian Roman Sludnov. You wasn’t in the race in the first half but jumped to second in the third quarter and rubbed out Sludnov in the touch in 2:14.43 to 2:14.66. Korean Sung Min Cho, leading at halfway,
was a distant third in 2:18.24.

100m individual medley
Germany’s Stefan Herbst crushed Slovenian Peter Mankoc from lane one. Herbst was second after each of the first three laps but burst through in the freestyle leg, much to the delight of his elated coach. He touched in 54.89 with Mankoc coming home in 55.16 and Korea’s In
Gyu Hwang (56.89).

50m butterfly
Ravil Hachaev of Uzbekistan claimed the gold in 24.19, just holding out Japan’s Yasutake Takamatsu (24.24), the silver medallist in the 200m butterfly, and Korea’s Do Hee Jeong (24.55).

Women:

100m freestyle:
50m freestyle gold medallist Katrin Meissner (54.97) denied a Korean gold for the second successive night in the opening race of the evening. She led from the start from eventual third-placegetter Danni Miatke (55.70), the fastest qualifier, but had to hold out a fast-finishing Korean, Yoon Ji Ryu (54.99), the silver medallist in the 50m freestyle.

50m breaststroke:
Mirna Jukic gained her third medal and second gold for Austria, stopping the clock in 31.40. Australian Sally Foster (32.22) was always on Jukic’s tail in the first lap but Jukic fired over the third quarter and slowed in the final 12m. Korea’s Ji Young Lee was third in 33.48.

400m individual medley:
Yana Klochkova from the Ukraine just loves the middle distances and collected her fourth gold medal in a time of 4:43.40. She took the lead in the butterfly and increased it in the backstroke but Brazilian Joanna Maranhao-Melo narrowed the lead to half-body length at the end of the breaststroke. However, Klochkova did enough to stay ahead and cruised to the line. South African Tamaryn Laubscher lowered her best time by five seconds in finishing third (4:49.23).

100m backstroke:
Japan’s Mai Nakamura (59,48) had no equal in this event and collected a second gold after the shorter race yesterday. She blitzed Korean pair Da Hye Lee (1:01.51) and Nam Eun Lee (1:01.69). Both Koreans claimed their third medals of the meet but none was a gold. Nakamura claimed 970 points for the win for the two highest-scoring races in women’s events, including last night’s 50m backstroke.

200m butterfly:
It was a Korean quinella with Kyung Hwa Park leading from start to finish in 2:11.82 but just holding out You Ri Kown (2:12.46) and Australian Kate Corkran (2:13.30). Kown was the latecomer, making up about three body lengths in the final 50m to overhaul Corkran and nearly upstage Park.

400m freestyle:
Yana Klochkova (UKR) deposited more money in her gold bank with a fifth for the meet, shooting to the front early and doing enough for victory. Touching in 4:10.66, Klochkova beat Germany’s Silke Nowotzin (4:13.04), the silver medallist in the 200m freestyle, and Australia’s Megan Walker (4:14.32), the bronze medallist in the 800m freestyle.

200m breaststroke:
Austria’s Mirna Jukic made a clean sweep of the breaststroke events, winning comfortably in 2:23.19. Australia’s Sally Foster swept the silver medals in 2:27.48 while Korea’s A Ra Cho gained her first medal in a tight finish for third in 2:28.57.

100m individual medley:
It was Klochkova again, easily winning her sixth gold medal in 1:03.25, a slower time than her prelim swim. . She beat China’s Xiao Yu Liu (1:04.75) and Korea’s Na Ri Park (1:04.91).

50m butterfly:
Two Australians made the podium with Danni Miatke winning in 27:08, ahead of the USA’s Michelle Defreese (27.41) and Australian Kate Corkran (27.54). It completed a set of medals for Miatke, two in butterfly and one in freestyle.

200m freestyle
Jana Klochkova (UKR) was the swimmer to watch in this race and she did not disappoint, claiming the race in the final stroke. It was German Silke Nowotzin, who took the lead into the 100m and 150m marks. She may have even had the touch turning for the last time but Klochkova was level in the final 10m and won by a touch in 1:58.78. Nowotzin improved nearly seven seconds on her heat time to finish in 1:58.94. Korean Hyun Ju Kim was third in 2:00.28, gaining from being between the Klochkova and Nowotzin.

100m breaststroke
Austrian Mirna Jukic took half a body length lead at 75m to a clear body length over Australian Sally Foster in 1:07.76. Foster touched in 1:08.67 but the real race was for third with China’s Xiao Yu Liu and eventual fourth-placed Korean A Ra Cho going neck and neck down the final lap. Liu won the battle in 1:10.36 ahead of Cho in 1:10.56.

100m butterfly: This was an Australian sweep with Kate Corkoran winning in 1:00.17 ahead of countrywoman Danni Miatke in 1:00.37. Corkoran was second at the halfway mark behind the USA’s Michelle Defreese but poured on the pace while Miatke snuck up in lane six and nearly out-touched her
team-mate. Defreese finished in 1:00.70.

50m backstroke
The thrash for cash saw Mai Nakamura from Japan post a creditable 27.87, just a second outside the world record and earning a handsome 952 points. She led home Koreans Nam Eun Jeong (28.47) and Da Hye Lee (29.36).

200m individual medley
Jana Klochkova (UKR) gained her second gold of the night with a 2:14.49 effort ahead of Austria’s Mirna Jukic (2:15.07) and Brazil’s Joanna Maranhao-Melo (2:16.49). Klochkova lost the lead in the breaststroke leg to 100m breaststroke gold medallist Mirna but was too strong in the freestyle, coming home to claim the win.

50m freestyle
Germany’s Katrin Meisner blasted home first in 25.21, ahead of Korea’s Yoon Ji Ryu (25.37) and Australia’s Danni Miatke (25.72). It was close at the 25m mark but Meisner stretched out and won comfortably.

800m freestyle
China’s Jing Zheng (8:40.79) won from lane eight, not having submitted a qualifying time in this straight final. In the middle of the pool, China’s Yan Zhang touched in 8:45.76 ahead of Australia’s Megan Walker in 8:47.76.

200m backstroke
Yana Klochkova (UKR) made it three golds from three races with a lane-one victory in 2:10.88. She was third after the first two splits but made her move in the third quarter to pull away from Da Hye Lee (2:12.63) and Nam Eun Lee (2:14.85).
