Oregon State Women and Stanford Men Take Speedo Cup

IRVINE, Calif., November 23. OSU’s Birte Steven set a Speedo Cup record in the 200-yard breaststroke as Oregon State (2-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) cruised to a first place finish out of 23 schools. The senior All-American was named Most Valuable Swimmer of the Speedo Cup along with senior Markus Rogan of the Stanford men.

Sophomore Ausra Pacebutaite rewrote her own Oregon State all-time record in the 200 backstroke and finished second. The sophomore pair of Christina Kinney and Monika Miroslaw bettered their second and third place standings in the OSU all-time records with their first and second place finishes in the 200 butterfly.

Adding to the first place finishes were junior Kristin Huston in the 100 freestyle and the OSU "A" relay team in the 400 freestyle relay. Freshman Sandy Hong finished second in the 1,650 freestyle with a time good enough to put her third in the OSU all-time books.

Also finishing well for the Beavers were junior Mari Embertson's third place finish in the 200 breaststroke, and sophomore Kristi Kuhlmey's tenth place finish in the 1,650 freestyle. The Beavers ended the meet with 1,069 points, 138.5 points ahead of second place California-San Diego.

The Stanford men's swimming team turned in another set of great swims to wrap up top honors at the UCI Speedo Cup with a total score of 1,885 at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach. BYU finished second (1,012) followed by CSU Bakersfield (950.5). Rounding out the top five teams were UC San Diego (567.5) and Air Force (513.5).

Senior Markus Rogan of Stanford was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of the UC Irvine/Speedo Cup.

Shuan Phillips of Stanford won the 1650 free in a Speedo Cup record time of 15:14.74. Teammate Andy Grant finished third, clocking in at 15:28.59 for the Cardinal. Markus Rogan set his third Speedo Cup record of the meet as he won his third event of the meet with a time of 1:42.97 in the 200 back. Fellow senior Peter Marshall took second (1:45.02) while freshman Hongzhe Sun placed third (1:45.57) to complete the Stanford 1-2-3 finish.

Cardinal Ben Wildman-Tobriner took top honors in the 100 freestyle in a time of 44.22 while teammate Bobby O'Bryan finished third (45.27). Stanford's Gary Marshall won the 200 breaststroke turning in a time of 2:00.22 while Dan Trupin placed third (2:02.41).

Jayme Cramer of Stanford broke the Speedo Cup record in the 200 fly with a winning time of 1:45.37. Cardinal Matt McDonald was second in a time of 1:48.00.
