Maryland Women, Western Kentucky Men Extend Leads on Day 2 of Terp Invite

COLLEGE PARK, Md., November 22. MARYLAND junior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) broke her own school record in the 400-yard individual medley by almost a full second during day two of the Terrapin Cup Invitational. She won her second event of the meet with a time of 4:15.43.

The 400 IM record is the second to fall this weekend, as junior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) broke her own school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.84 last night leading off the 400-yard medley relay.

As a team, the Terp women have a commanding lead over Richmond with 736.50 points. The second-place Spiders have 591.50, and Connecticut (508.50), Western Kentucky (276) and William and Mary (197.50) rounding out the top five.

On the men's side, Western Kentucky leads with 618 points followed by Connecticut (507). Maryland is third (361) while West Chester (345) and James Madison (245) round out the top five.

Maryland freshman Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) won the 100-yard butterfly for the second time in her career. Her time of 54.12 just missed the school record by .11 seconds. Knepper also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.34.

The women swept the relays, with the 200-yard medley relay team of Knepper, sophomore Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), deToll and junior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) swimming a time of 1:42.88 and the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Lavell, sophomore Inbal Levavi (Ichad, Israel), senior Valerie Courtois (Saveuse, France) and Knepper swimming a time of 7:28.02.

The Terps placed five women into the 100-yard butterfly finals. Junior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) took second behind deToll (54.57), with freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) finishing fourth (56.89), sophomore Barbara Sumrall (57.80) finishing seventh and freshman Orsi Ferenczy (Fot, Hungary) placing eighth.

Other finalists included Levavi, who placed third in the 400-IM (4:24.74); Courtois, who took fourth in the 200-free (1:52.89); Kovacs, who finished third in the 100-breast (1:03.94); Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia), who placed fifth in the 100-breast (1:05.66); and Sumrall, who placed eighth in the 100-back (59.76).

Junior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) had the Terps' only victory of the day for the men, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.19. Freshman Ryan Shore (Cherry Hill, N.J.) finished eighth in that event.

Other finalists included senior Ari Limor (Givatym, Israel), who finished fifth in the 200-free (1:42.50) and junior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.), who placed fourth in the 100-breast (57.72).

The Terrapin Cup Invitational concludes tomorrow at the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m.
