Rice Owls Sign Amy Halsey

HOUSTON, Texas, November 19. ONE of the top high school swimmers from the greater Houston area has signed with Rice University for next season head swim coach Seth Huston announced.

Amy Halsey of Katy, Texas signed with the Rice Owls in the sport's early period and will join the team for the 2004-05 season. Halsey is a two-time high school all-American in the backstroke, a qualifier for the USA Swimming Open and Senior Nationals, and a six-time record holder at Cinco Ranch High School. She reached the state finals of the 100-yard backstroke and 200-individual medley in 2003 and has served as the squad's team captain.

Coach Huston said that tapping into the area's rich talent base was one of the goals he set after taking the helm of the Rice program last season. Halsey is the first step toward that goal and she provides some versatility in being able to compete in a host of different events.

"Amy is a great catch," Huston said. "It was a conscious decision to recruit the Houston area with it's excellent talent pool, and Amy is our first local signee. She is multi-talented, in athletics, academics and the arts, and has a positive personality that carries over to her teammates. She shores up our line up in the backstroke and IM. I know she has her best swimming ahead of her at Rice."

Halsey brings Huston's signing class to two. Brittany Massengale of Alma, Ark., also signed with the Owls in the sport's early period.
