Hope Sweeps Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich., Nov. 14. BOTH Hope swimming/diving teams posted dual meet victories over rival Kalamazoo on Friday night.

The Flying Dutch remained undefeated on the season (4-0) by gaining a 150-84 victory while the Flying Dutchmen moved to 3-1 behind a 129-112 triumph.

WOMEN'S MEET
The Flying Dutch swept (1-2-3) the 200-yard backstroke and finished 1-2 in six other events, including every freestyle race. It was accomplished with a different Hope swimmer claiming first place in each race.

Audrey Arnold led the sweep in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time
(2:15.09) followed by teammates Sarah Diekevers (2:19.14) and Lisa Baran (2:21.10).

Gaining the 1-2 finishes were: 1,000 free, Katie Robinson (11:29.51) and Erica VanGilder (11:31.23); 200 free, Michelle Smith (1:59.29, season best) and Lisa Smith (2:01.82); 50 free, Erika Steele (:25.32) and Kristen Hanna (:26.39); 200 individual medley, Meagan O'Neil (2:18.74, season best) and Sarah Diekevers (2:19.08); 100 free, Lisa Ekdom (:55.64) and Michelle Smith (:56.37); 500 free, Sarah Smith (5:26.76) and Katie Robinson (5:42.35).

Other Hope winners were diver Stephanie Buck on the one-meter board (season best 233.45 pts.) and Lisa Smith in the 200 butterfly (season best 2:17.19).

MEN'S MEET
The Flying Dutchmen used their depth to gain the close victory that wasn't assured until the final event.

Kalamazoo won six of the 11 individual events, but Hope claimed both relays and finished one-two in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke.

Sophomore Kurt Blohm was a double winner capturing the 100 freestyle (48.57) and 200 freestyle (1:47.83). Blohm was joined by teammate Travis Barkel (49.74) in finishing 1-2 in the 100 freestyle.

Going one-two in the 200 backstroke were Ian Kobes (2:01.45) and Chris Lininger (2:04.29).

Other Hope winners were Jeff Heydlauff in the 50 free (:22.51) and Chris Hamstra in the 500 free (5:04.75).

Diver Lee Heerspink had season-best performances on both boards, 191.40 pts. on the one-meter and 198.20 on the three-meter.
