Brittany Massengale Signs With Rice

HOUSTON, Tex., November 14. ONE of the region's top distance swimmers from the high school ranks has signed with Rice University for next season head swim coach Seth Huston announced on Thursday (Nov. 13).

Brittany Massengale of Alma, Ark., signed with the Owls in the sport's early period and will join the team for the 2004-05 season. Massengale is a two-time high school all-American in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, a six-time state champion and a state record holder at Alma High School. She reached the championship finals of the 1,500-meters at the USA Swimming Nationals in 2002 and was a qualifier for the 2004 Olympic trials in the 400-freestyle.

Huston notes that Massengale is just as strong academically as she is athletically. A scholastic all-American in 2002 and 2003, Massengale will be in step with the Rice's challenging curriculum.

"Brittany is possibly the best swimmer Rice has ever signed out of high school," Huston said. "She will be an instant contributor in distance events and will help the Rice swim team climb into the NCAA top 25 and beyond. Brittany is a fantastic student, exactly the kind of person we want to be a part of our program."
