NCAA Div 1: Virginia’s Crippen and Kelly Named ACC Swimmers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C., November 3. UNIVERSITY of Virginia swimmers Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, respectively. Crippen won four events in a pair of UVa men's dual meet victories, while Kelly won five events in two women's dual meet wins. It marks the second consecutive week Kelly has earned the ACC's weekly honor.

Crippen, a second-year, competed in six events and won four in the ninth-ranked Cavalier men's victories over South Carolina (140.5-96.5) on October 31 and Clemson (137.7-105.5) on November 1. Against South Carolina, he won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:27.42 and finished second in the 200 freestyle with a conference-best time of 1:40.26. In UVa's ACC victory over Clemson, Crippen won all three events he competed in. He opened the meet by winning the 1000 free (9:09.46) and came right back to win the 200 free (1:40.94) in the next men's event. Crippen capped off his day by taking the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:28.55.

Crippen, who was named CollegeSwimming.com's Division I Men's Swimmer of the Week last week, has now been named the ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week four times in two seasons. Crippen was named to 2003 ACC Swimmer of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Kelly, a first-year, won five of six events in 17th-ranked UVa's 134-109 win over South Carolina on October 31 and 151-90 ACC triumph over Clemson on November 1. In the win over South Carolina, Kelly won the 200 butterfly (2:02.81) and 500 free (4:51.18) while finishing second in the 200 free in a season-best time (1:51.77). She capped off the week by winning three individual events against Clemson. Kelly won the 1000 free (9:49.89), 200 butterfly (2:04.30) and 500 free (4:50.98). She won the 1000 free by more than 14 seconds.

The nationally-ranked Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, November 7 when they host ACC rival Georgia Tech at 2:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The diving competition begins at 1:00 p.m.
