1998 Phillips 66 National Championships: Day 1

CLOVIS, CA – With temperatures over 100 degrees, the first day of Nationals kicked off with tremendous swims in the distance events.

Diana Munz, the 1998 World Championship silver medalist in the women’s 800m freestyle, won this event in a time of 8:31.74. In the process, she upset Brooke Bennett, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the 800 free.

Chris Thompson won the men’s 800m freestyle title with a time of 7:58.26, as he was the only swimmer in the field to break 8 minutes.
