DeBruijn Breaks European Record

Holland’s Inge DeBruijn set a European record in the 50 meter freestyle last weekend at the Potomac Valley Swimming Long Course Championships in Oakton, Virginia. Her time of 25.06 seconds broke the previous record of 25.10, set by Natalia Mescheryakova of Russia at the 1994 World Championships in Rome. Mescheryakova tested positive for steroids last year and is under a two-year suspension.

DeBruijn’s time is the world’s fastest this year, surpassing Amy Van Dyken’s winning time at the 1998 World Championships in Perth.
