Decision On Chinese Swimmers To Be Announced July 24

FINA’s executive director, Cornel Marculescu, told Swimming World today that on July 24, the international governing body will announce its decision on the four Chinese swimmers who tested positive for probenecid at the World Championships in Perth last January. Probenecid is a drug used to mask the use of illegal anabolic steroids.

The four initially were suspended by FINA, but were later reinstated after Chinese officials argued that the swimmers actually had taken a traditional Chinese herb, which produced the same chemical profile as the outlawed masking agent.

Presumably, FINA’s doping panel has tested the herb to validate (or invalidate) this claim.
