Venezuelan Swimmer Charged with Sexual Abuse

SABADELL, Spain, August 6. TWENTY-nine year-old Venezuelan open water champion and swim coach, Danny Chocrón, was arrested two weeks ago in Spain during last month's World Championships in Barcelona.

Chocrón was charged with sexual abuse involving three teenage girls that he coached in Jacksonville, Florida between 2000 and 2001. Previously charges had been brought against him in Florida by one of the girls.

The Venezuelan Aquatics Sport Federation (FEVEDA) issued a statement of support for Chocrón: "We have faith in Danny, who served the national team for 18 years," said Lourdes Goncalves, Chairman of FEVEDA.

"We support this distinguished athlete for his proven good behavior."

It is not clear what jurisdiction Spain has over the case.
