Kelly Wins Two on Day Two of Long Island Open

NASSAU, Long Island, N.Y., July 11. SIXTEEN year-old Kim Kelly won two events on Day Two of the 2003 Long Island Open, bringing her haul to three golds in three events over the first two days of the four-day meet.

Kelly began the day with a dramatic, come-from-behind victory in the 200 meter fly. Fifth at the 50, fourth at the 100 and second at the 150, kelly out-sprinted Rutgers' Michelle DeFreese on the final lap to win in 2:16.45. De Freese followed in 2:17.02.

Kelly's win in the 400 free contrasted sharply with her 200 fly as she led all the way, touching in 4:19.80, with BAD teammate Paola Duguet, 15, second in 4:21.36.

Germantown's Fran Crippen had the day's best men's swim, as he took the 400 free in 3:55.83, well ahead of his University of Virginia teammate, Ian Prichard, 4:02.06. Yesterday Crippen, like Kelly, won the 800 free.

Jess Lewis won the women's 100 free in 57.74, winning by about a second. The men's 100 followed the same script as Chris Sullivan took a nearly one second victory in 51.89.

Kelly Harrigan, 18, just managed to hold off a fast-closing 14 year-old, Tricia Weaner, to take the women's 200 back, 2:17.58 to 2:17.64. On the men's side, Ian Clark had a much easier time of it, as his 2:04.64 was almost two-and-a-half seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Mark Haupt won the men's 200 fly in 2:03.48, outlasting Kellan O'Connor, 2:04.03.
