WILTON, Conn., June 22. BEN Michaelson, of the SNOCO Swim Club set a new American record in the 100 meter (short course) fly this morning at a USA Swimming meet in Wilton, Connecticut.
Michaelson, who graces the cover of the current (June) issue of Swimming World, clocked 51.55 seconds, well under the old record of 52.00 set By Nate Dusing at the 2000 NCAA Men's meet in Minneapolis.
Ben's splits: 24.0 - 27.5.
Due to the large number of entries, the Wilton meet is swum short course meters during the preliminaries and long course meters in the evening.
Michaelson accomplished the feat in 63 degree temperatures with a light rain falling on the outdoor facility. He also recorded the record at the halfway point of the 200 meter butterfly race. He continued on finishing the entire 200 meter distance legally.
He will be swimming for the USA in the Pan Am Games this summer.
