Swim from New York to Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt., June 13. SWIMMERS looking for the ultimate challenge and the opportunity to help others are invited to participate in the 7th Annual Greater Burlington YMCA Shore to Shore Lake Swim on Saturday, August 9, 2003.

The eight-mile swim starts at Willsboro Point, New York, and ends in Burlington. Swimmers may participate individually or as part of a relay team. The YMCA requests that only swimmers with open-water experience participate.

The event is a fundraiser for the YMCA’s free and subsidized aquatic programs. The Greater Burlington YMCA provides an adaptive swim program for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities, scholarships for youth swim lessons, a free water safety and basic swim skills program for area fourth graders, free access to pool time for elders, and exercise programs for special populations including arthritis and pre-natal classes.

A minimum of $250 in pledges is required for individual swimmers and $500 in pledges for relay team. Participants receive an event t-shirt and individuals raising more than $500 receive a fleece vest. Participants are asked to provide their own chase boat for the event. A limited number of volunteer boats will be available.

The YMCA is seeking volunteers, including lifeguards and small boat owners, for the event.
