NCAA Div. I Women: Virginia Takes Commanding Lead After Day 2 of ACC Champs

CHAPEL HILL, NC., February 21. VIRGINIA'S Cavalier women's swimming and diving team moved into the lead after Day 2 action in the 24th Atlantic Coast Conference Championships here tonight.

And while they've climbed from fourth to second, triple-defending champ North Carolina, guided by veteran Tar Heel coach Frank Comfort, will have to scale the Matterhorn tomorrow for a four-peat.

But the "Matterhorn" is UNC's own Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the Chapel Hill campus and, as Auburn and Texas are demonstrating, there's "no place like home."

Coach Mark Bernardino's Lady Cavaliers lead the standings with 464 points. North Carolina is second with 376 points and Maryland stands in third, trailing the Tar Heels by only five points with 371, heading into the final day of competition.

Thursday's leader, surprising Florida State, got a taste of reality this evening and has dropped back to fourth with 364. Clemson (270), Georgia Tech (168), Duke (165) and North Carolina State (161) round out the team standings.

Tonight's proceedings got off to an interesting if unexpected start as, for the first time in ACC history, there was a tie in the 200 yard medley relay. In this case, it was between Clemson's Tigers and the Cavs, with both teams clocking an NCAA "B" cut 1:41.65. UVA was seeded fourth going in, so to come out with 19 big points is a pleasant surprise. Maryland was third in 1:41.76.

Virginia continued its success in the next race, taking first and second in the 400 individual medley. UVA's Mirjana Bosevska, a Macedonian Olympian and her nation's female Athlete of the Year last year, won in a pool-record 4:14.14.

Her pr, UVA- and ACC-record is 4:09.75 from last season's NCAAs at Texas.

By winning, Bosevska becomes the second swimmer of the 2003 ACC Championships — and first non-North Carolinian — to win the same individual event four-consecutive years. Christy Watkins in the 50 free first accomplished that feat last evening. Bosevska's teammate Amy Baly placed second (4:16.11) and Florida State's Andree-Anne Leroy — 200 IM champ — came in third (4:18.40).

The winner's team gets her an auto entry into NCAAs (cut is 4:15.12) while Nos. 2-3 make the consideration standard of 4:22+.

In the 100 yard butterfly, Virginia's Cynthia Roller touched first in 54.59, with a pr and top-qualifier 54.42 from the prelims. Duke freshman Katie Ness, placed second behind 54.93 and swam a pr and Blue Devil-record 54.86 in the heats. Florida State's Emily Breen rounded out the top three in 55.03.

(NCAA auto is 54.14 with the "B" cut a 55.76.)

UNC's Watkins, who holds the conference record in the 100 back (53.92 from her freshman year in Y2K), swam the 100 butterfly instead and could only manage 13th. Had she swum (and perhaps won or finished among the top two or three) in the 100 back, the 'Heels' fortunes would have been that much better.

But she didn't so perhaps she'll pull off a 48+ 100 free win Saturday.

Next came the shocker of the evening. Maryland's Shandra Johnson, who won the 500 free by .01, splashed to her second victory with a a big, Big, BIG win in the 200 yard freestyle (pr and Terp-record 1:47.17).

Second was UNC's double-defending champ, Jessie Perruquet, the Tar Heel record-holder (1:45.65 from last season's NCAAs) in a pedestrian 1:48.77). She was 1:48.46 in the heats.

It's not known if JP is either sick and/or injured here. But if she's healthy, losing her favorite race — and a race she's dominated since enrolling at Chapel Hill two years ago — has to be heartbreaking both for her and Comfort.

Florida State's Loren Hansen took third (1:49.25).

The Seminoles' British Olympian, Emma Duton, fourth in the 200 IM opening-night, led the way in the 100 breaststroke with a pr and FSU-record 1:01.87. Maryland's Jillian Martin (1:02.14) and North Carolina's Becky Acker (1:02.49) were next.

In the 100 backstroke, Virginia froshwoman Brielle White — who had the fastest medley relay leadoff split (pr 54.35) won in 54.70 after qualifying No. 1 with a Cav-record 54.01. Clemson's Lindsey Kroeger was second (pr 55.28) and Maryland's Megan Knepper finished third (55.75). The "A" cut is 55.15.

Virginia's 800 freestyle relay foursome completed a successful evening by racing to the gold (7:18.80) with North Carolina second (7:20.09). Florida State finishing third (7:23.51). The top two teams made the
"B" cut.

Bosevska swam the third leg for the Cavs and recorded a 1:49+ split. Perrequet swam third for Tar Heels and registered a 1:49.15 split. Maryland's Johnson, 200 free champ, showed that swim didn't tire her in the least as she led off the Terps' relay in 1:48.29 — fastest split of the race, period.
