NCAA Div. I Women: Indiana Charges Ahead on Day 2 of Big 10 Champs

WEST LAFAYETTE, In., February 20. COACH Dorsey Tierney's Indiana Lady Hoosiers, runners-up at last year's meet to Penn State, have taken a slight lead over Wisconsin after Day 2 of the 2003 Big 10 women's Championships here.

Indiana has a 220-218 lead over Coach Eric Hansen's Lady Badgers, with Coach Jim Richardson's Michigan Wolverines third (190) and the defending champ Penn State Nittany Lions fourth (174). Host Purdue with 150 points is fifth.

Wisconsin’s Lady Badgers came out for this evening's finals adorned in Hawaiian leis and their parents clothed in Hawaiian t-shirts. The motif had its desired effect as the Badgers won three titles and sophomore Carly Piper set a conference-championship record 4:41.58 for the 500 free.

That time, her pr by more than two seconds, is second on the all-time Big 10 list to Badger Ellen Stonebraker's conference record 4:41.26 from the 1999 NCAAs.

“Out of six [swimming] events, we’ve won four,” Hansen
said. “And that makes me very happy.”

The Badgers’ evening garb paid tribute to their intense training trip which takes place each year in Hawaii. On Thursday night, UW’s training equaled four NCAA ‘A’ standards, three Big Ten titles, two UW school records and a Big Ten championships record.

The Badgers opened the evening with a 1:30.36 200 free relay victory, surpassing the NCAA "A" cut and breaking the Doris Z. Holloway pool record in the process. Indiana tied Michigan for third.

Senior Jenny Lyman, competing in her third event and third relay of the championships, led off with a 22.91. Betsy Hassebroek and freshman Sarah Hernandez followed with quicker splits and senior Sarah McCauley anchored the win with the race's fastest split (22.36).

Piper, a quadruple gold-medalist at last year's meet as a rookie (200-500-1650 frees, 800 free relay), entered the water next as the top seed in the 500 free. The defending Big Ten champ then cruised to victory in her pr and Big 10-meet record 4:41.58, some five seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher.

Lyman, the Badgers’ workhorse through two days of competition, won her third title by defending her championship in the 50 free. Her winning time (pr 22.80) is also a Badger record. Lyman automatically qualified for NCAAs with her sixth overall Big Ten title.

Two other 200 free relay team members tallied points for the Badgers in the 50 free. Hernandez won the consolation final in 23.24, an NCAA ‘B’ time, while Hassebroek took fifth in the heat and 13th overall.

Michigan's Sara Johnson won a tight battle in the 200 IM from Badger Anna Trinidad, taking the gold by the barest of margins (.01, 2:00.55-2:00.6). Both swimmers made the "A" cut and both times were prs too.

Badgers Bethany Pendleton and Emily Pisula followed the top two in 2:01.17 and 2:01.57, respectively. Freshman Amalia Sarnecki finished fourth in the consolation final. Pendleton, Pisula and Sarnecki all swam NCAA ‘B’ times.

Indiana picked up valuable points in the 1-meter diving. taking the the top two spots with Sara Hildebrand capturing the gold – IU's only victory so far in the competition. The Hoosiers also took third and eighth in the 500 free, eighth in the 200 IM and a runner-up spot in the 50 free.

The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with seven events. Prelims start at 10 AM EST while finals begin at 6 PM.
