Coach Schmidt Dies

On Feb. 3, William E. Schmidt, longtime coach of York YMCA in Pennsylvania, passed away at the age of 73. One of his former swimmers, Phyllis Beck, herself a coach now, writes of Coach Schmidt: “He was my coach from 1965 to 1977…What I really should say is Bill is my coach forever. Bill Schmidt was the kind of coach who was concerned not just with swimming, but with what you gained from the total experience of swimming.”
