George Wendt Sets National Masters 400 IM Mark

By Mark Urban

ELMHURST, Illinois, Feb.16. FIFTY-FIVE year-old George Wendt shattered the USMS national record for the 55-59 age group in the 400 yard individual medley at the Dupage Distance Classic.

Wendt, a member of Chicago Masters, touched in 4:52.84, bettering Drury Gallagher’s old mark of 4:56.23 from May 18, 1997.

Wendt says he attributes his new record to the amount of stroke and endurance work he puts in each week at the University of Illinois at Chicago under Head Coach Paul Moniak. "I have had a great opportunity to train with some very talented people," says Wendt. "My 400 IM buddies pushed my limits and helped me achieve this goal."
