NCAA Div. I Women: Princeton Beats Columbia for 41st Straight Dual Meet Win

PRINCETON, NJ, February 9. UCLA's men's basketball teams had an 88-game win streak in the early 1970s and Connecticut's women's hoops' team is currently riding a two-year unbeaten skein.

Well, at the rate they're going, Coach Susan Teeter's Princetonm Lady Tiger swimemrs and divers may eclipse both those lofty streaks before too long.

Princeton broke open a close meet by winning six-consecutive races to record its 41st-straight dual meet victory here Friday evening at DeNuzio Pool, defeating Columbia's Lions, 133-105.

The win wraps up yet another undefeated season for Teeter's Tigers, queens of the Ivy League, as they finish with a 9-0 record heading into the Ivy League Championship meet the end of this month — where they are treble-defending champs.

The only other major Division 1 women's team that is undefeated is Coach David Marsh's Auburn Lady Tigers, defending NCAA champs.

(www.swiminfo.com would like to hear from schools around the country that have had long streaks in the past. Texas won five-consecutive NCAA women's titles in the mid-'80s and Stanford was undefeated for umpteen-straight meets in the '90s. In the '60s and '70s, USC and Indiana [men] had extended streaks too. Let us know how Princeton's 41 and counting stacks up.)

Eight different Princeton swimmers won individual events and the 200-yard medley relay team got things rolling with a win in the opening event. The senior foursome of Michelle Nielson, Chrissy Holland, Margaret Hirce and Molly Seto took the race in a time of 1:48.60. Seto turned around and won event three, the 50-yard butterfly, in 26.12.

Seniors Meagan Donahue (50 freestyle), Kristy Wilson (1-meter diving) and Becky Wein (100 freestyle) all won individual events for the Tigers. Sophomore Amy Jones won the 100 butterfly while freshmen Whitney Ryan (200 IM), Eileen Altenburger (200 free, 1:56.33) and Sarah Schaeffer (100 breaststroke) also took scored victories on the night.

Princeton's 9-0 season marks the fifth-consecutive unbeaten season for the Teeter's tempestuous Tigers. Princeton finished 8-0 the last two seasons, 9-0 in 1999-2000 and 6-0 in 1998-99. The Tigers, who have won three straight Ivy League Championship meets, host the 2003 conference championships Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1.

Can you say four-straight?
