NCAA Div. I Women: Texas Nudges Rice in Off-Distance Events

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 8. THE 8th-ranked University of Texas women's swimming and diving team closed out its regular dual meet schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 127-112 victory over Rice at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

There was no men's meet as Rice eliminated it's men's team.

The meet, which consisted of off-distance events, marked the last regular season dual meet for seven LOnghorn seniors in Emily Ballenger (Anderson, S.C.), Jennifer Cray (Federal Way, Wash.), Ashlee Fotinakes (Marietta, Ga.), Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.),
Summer Mitchell (Troy, Mich.), Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore).

"It is really hard to believe that four years has already gone by with this class," said co-head coach Jill Sterkel. "This is an emotional day for me because this has been a very special class that has done a lot of great things for The University of Texas. I'm happy that the Big 12 Conference Championships are in Austin so they will get one last chance to swim at home and hopefully the fans will come out and show their support for this group one last time."

Yeo, a three-time Olympian for the Republic of Singapore, made the most of her races on Saturday by winning the 150-yard freestyle (1:18.52) as well as teaming with freshman Elizabeth Wylcliffe (Ontario, Canada), Fotinakes and Phenix for a win in the 300-yard medley relay (2:32.66).

Fotinakes also added a triumph in her final dual meet in Austin by posting the top time in the 75-yard breaststroke at 47.27.

Sophomore Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.), a two-time Big 12 Conference Swimmer of the Month selection this season, added two individual victories by posting the fastest times in the 75-yard backstroke (40.32) and the 25-yard freestyle (10.75).

Joining Wanezek in the winner's circle was Wycliffe in the 150-yard backstroke (1:27.60) and junior Jenna Bridges (Tallahassee, Fla.) in the 75-yard freestyle (37.68).

Texas next meet will be the Big 12 Conference Championships, from Wednesday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.
