NCAA Div. I Women: Notre Dame Squeaks by Michigan, 153-147, on Final Relay

SOUTH BEND, In., February 1. AFTER 15 events, it came down to the final relay — the 200 yard freestyle — and Notre Dame's women won by .33 to win the race and a hard-fought 153-147 dial-meet over Big 10 power Michigan at the Rolfs Aquatic Center today.

Coach Bailey Weathers' Fighting Irish ladies, sextuple defending Big East Champions, are now headed for the conference meet at the Goodwill Games Pool on Long Island in three weeks after improving to 9-1-1 on the season. Michigan, headed for the Big 10s at Purdue the same weekend, falls to 3-3 overall.

Notre Dame's 200 freestyle relay foursome of junior Danielle Hulick, senior Heidi Hendrick, sophomore Katie Eckholt and sophomore Kristen Peterson narrowly outtouched Michigan's team of Laura Kaznecki, Erin Abbey, Anne Weilbacher and Abby Seskevics. Notre Dame clocked in 1:35.03 while the Wolverines came home in 1:35.36.

Overall, Notre Dame won nine races while taking the measure of Coach Jim Richardson's Wolverines, who took gold in the first three events (200 medley relay, 1650 free, 200 free). That latter race was won by sophomore Amy McCullough, who ranks fifth nationally with her pr 1:46.89 from the Tar Heel Invitational at Chapel Hill last November.

Hulick put the Irish on the scoreboard by splashing home first in the 100 backstroke (56.33) with Peterson fourth and freshman Kara Santelli was fifth.

After Michigan's Kelli Stein won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.74), Irish junior Lisa Garcia was first in the 200 butterfly (2:01.03). Teammate Christel Bouvron, a rookie, was third (2:03.69) and sophomore Brooke Taylor was fourth (2:05.00) as the Irish "lasses" began cutting into the then-sizeable Wolverine lead.

Hulick made it two for two when she touched first in the 50 freestyle (23.90) with Notre Dame also scoring a second and third via Seskevics (24.21) and Kaznecki (24.31).

Hendrick, swimming in her final home meet as a member of the Irish, next struck gold the 100 freestyle in 51.86. Michigan took the next three places, followed by Eckholt in fifth (54.10).

Peterson, who has struggled all season after suffering mono in the fall, won her first big race of the spring by taking top honors in 200 backstroke. Peterson's time was 2:03.42, while Michigan's Sara Johnson was second (2:04.10) and Abbey was third (2:04.85) Junior Marie Labosky was fourth and sophomore Sarah Alwen was fifth.

Peterson had an excellent Big East Championships for the Irish last season, finaling second in both dorsal events and recording prs in each (55.45-1:58.41). If the Wichita, Ks. native can regain that form in three weeks the Irish fortunes will be substantially bolstered.

Stein then scored her second win in the 200 breaststroke and Michigan's Emily-Clare Fenn also won her second race when she was first in the 500 freestyle. She earlier had won the 1650 freestyle for a nice hat trick. Weilbacher then took the 100 butterfly (55.38), drawing Michigan ever closer to the Irish.

Marie Labosky put her team ahead when she took first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.82) with Garcia third (2:07.85) and senior Amy Deger fourth.

Notre Dame's Meghan Perry-Eaton also helped the Irish cause big-time, winning both the one and three-meter diving competitions. She won the one-meter event with 322.64 points as Michigan's Tealin Kelemen was second in 267.52. Perry-Eaton also dominated the three-meter event with 307.95 points, 46 points higher than her closest competitor.
