Minnesota Men, Wisconsin Women Dispatch Big 10 Rivals

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 1. THE 7th-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team continued to show its strength today, defeating No. 10 Wisconsin 237- 110 and No. 15 Purdue by a score of 240-113.

On the women's side, The No. 8 Wisconsin women’s team swept its competition, picking up three Big Ten wins. UW defeated Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue to improve to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Illinois does not have a men's team, having killed it off more than a decade ago.

Men's meet
In the men's meet, the Golden Gophers claimed first place in four events including the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.64. Allen Ong, Terrence Silkaitis, Neil Osten and Brian Gettelfinger comprised the winning ‘A’ relay squad. The Gophers also won the 400 yard freestyle relay with a mark of 2:59.05. This time provisionally qualifies the group for NCAA national competition.

Individually for Minnesota, Matthew Taylor captured the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.36 while teammate Silkaitis took top honors in the 100 yard freestyle clocking in at 44.46. Todd Smolinski grabbed second place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.32

In the three meter diving competition, Ben Baumann took second place and John Schmidt claimed third place with marks of 457.73 and 436.73 respectively.

"The right team won today,” Head Coach Dennis Dale said. “The scoring margin is a bit unexpected, I thought it may be closer. I was pleased with our relay teams and Matt Taylor for his performance. I felt we competed better yesterday and we need to work a little on our consistency to be ready for the Big Ten meets.”

Wisconsin split its competition Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 15 Purdue and falling to host No. 7 Minnesota. UW improved to 9-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten.

“I thought we swam pretty well,” coach Eric Hansen said. “We got it done. We weren’t the sharpest because we haven’t swam [competitively] for a couple weeks, but we’re back on schedule.”

The Badgers started and closed the second day of action with second-place finishes in the relays. In the 200 free relay, Dale Rogers, Matt Marshall, Adam Mania and Chris Anderson touched in 1:22.53. The day’s final event edged the Badgers past Purdue as UW’s 400 free relay (Mania, Marshall, Eric Wiesner, Rogers) finished second in 2:59.59.

Brian Neuman and Matt Marshall took first-place honors in the in the 400 IM and 100 fly, respectively. Rogers added a second-place finish in the 100 free.

“We’re just getting through some sickness,” Hansen said. “We’re ready to have full team back at 100 percent health-wise.”

Women's meet
“We finally won based on depth and that’s what we're going to need at Big Tens,” said coach Eric Hansen, whose squad has one more dual before the conference meet. “We’re pretty solid, we don’t have a lot of holes. We just need everybody to step up and play their roles.”

Emily Pisula and Jenny Lyman picked up wins for the Badgers on day two in the 400 IM and 100 free, respectively. Sarah McCauley added a victory in the 200 back and Carly Piper touched first in the 500 free.

“Lyman is on schedule to do something spectacular at Big Tens,” Hansen said. “As well as McCauley, Piper and Pisula.”

The Badgers take on in-state rivals UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee Friday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. It is UW’s third and final home meet of the season.

“We’re just getting through some sickness,” Hansen said. “We’re ready to have full team back at 100 percent health-wise.”

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team gained momentum for the postseason Saturday against Big Ten opponents Illinois, No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 17 Purdue.

Minnesota defeated No. 17 Purdue 211-142, Illinois 212-133 and fell to No. 8 Wisconsin, 188- 164.

“For us to compete well against such excellent competition is so big for our squad,” Head Coach Jean Freeman said. “I am thrilled with the performances of so many swimmers and divers today. We are definitely a different team than we were last year at this time. This is the most confidence I have seen in our team.”

The one meter diving team claimed a clean sweep with Holly Hannerman leading the way with a mark of 242.00. Abbie Bowdsen, Shannon Jackson and Kim Bahmer took the remaining three spots for the Gophers.

Juleen Rodakowski also gathered top honors in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.97. Teammate Keri Hehn was another bright spot for Minnesota taking second in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:15.92. With that mark, Hehn qualifies provisionally for NCAA national championship competition.

The Golden Gophers were edge out by Wisconsin and captured second place in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Megan Moore, Dana Baum, Katy Coombe and Kate Hardt finished with a time of 3:29.36.
