NCAA Div. I: Penn State Sweeps Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J., February 1. THE Penn State men’s and women’s swimming and diving team posted another win on Saturday afternoon at Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. The men swam past the Scarlet Knights 146-95, while the women came up strong 157-86.

The men’s team has a 3-2 record and is ranked No. 17 by the CSCAA, while women are ranked No. 20 by the CSCAA and sport a 3-2 record.

On the men’s side, senior Matt Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) took home the crown in the 200 Freestyle and the 200 Butterfly with the times of 1:39.66 and 1:51.23, respectively. Junior Todd Minnier also came up strong for the Lions with a win in the Men 200 IM with a time of 1:51.26.

Head Coach Bill Dorenkott stated “It was nice to race an up-and-coming program like Rutgers. They are very well coached and disciplined. We’re right where we should be four weeks out of the Big Ten’s.”

The women came off with an impressive victory on the road. The quartet of Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Dee Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) took home the title of the 400 Medley Relay with the time of 3:43.77. Junior Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) took home the title in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:50.02

Dorenkott added, “The women raced really well. We’re excited to see the younger kids’ step up and one of the challenges this weekend was to get off the bus, compete well and travel home and step up to compete again. Just like we’ll have to at the Big Ten’s and NCAA’s.”

Penn State returns to the pool tomorrow afternoon for the final home meet of the season versus West Chester at 12:00 pm in McCoy Natatorium. The seniors will be honored at this event.
