Thorpe Swims A Blistering 200 IM at World Cup

By Phillip Whitten

STOCKHOLM, Jan 22. AUSTRALIA'S Ian Thorpe swam a stunning 200m IM in his international debut, but it was hometown favorite Emma Igelstrom who delighted the crowd with twin victories tonight.

Igelstrom took the 50m breaststroke in 30.51, decisively defeating arch-rival Zoe Baker of Britain, 30.75. The USA's Gabrielle Rose, who is having an outstanding World Cup tour, was third in 31.46.

Igelstrom followed her win in the sprint with an even more impressive win in the 200, her 2:23.91 almost four seconds in front of Canada's Rhi Leier. The wins today gave the smiling Swede a sweep of all three breaststroke events in Stockholm.

Thorpe's initial foray into the medley was as dramatic as any in recent years, his success sending a chilling warning to it the likes of Jani Sievinen, Massi Rosolino and Michael Phelps that there may well be a new name in the mix for Barcelona gold. In his first medley race in six years, The Thorpedo left a dismayed group of medleyists in his wake as he came roaring from behind to win in 1:56.00.

Britain's James Hickman, who won the event in Paris last weekend and eventual silver medalist here, had to settle for second after leading most of the way, and New Zealand's Dean Kent, the 400m medley champion in both Paris and Stockholm, was third.

Russia's Roman Sloudnov took the 100m breaststroke title in a national record 57.97, while teammate Igor Marchenko did the same in the 100 fly, 51.17.

Lindsay Benko showed she is rounding nicely into shape with a very strong 4:03.13 effort to take the 400m free. Gaby Rose came oh-so-close to upsetting Martina Moravcova in the 100m Im, falling 3-hundredths short of the Slovak's 1:00.55.
400m freestyle crown in 4.03.13.

British sprinter Mark Foster, 32, showed there are plenty of fast-twitch fibers still tweitching in his body, as he took the 50 free in 21.39.
