UCLA Women Defeat UCSD

LOS ANGELES, January 18. IN their final home meet of the 2002-'03 season, Coach Cyndi Gallagher's UCLA Bruins defeated UC San Diego's Tritons, 139 to 94.

UCLA improves its record to 5-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-10. On the day, the Bruins won all 14 events.

Bruin individual winners included Liz Keating in the 1000 free (10:15.02), Malin Svahnstrom (200 free, 1:52.34), LeAnne Cadag (100 back, 58.37), Leslie Hovsepian (100 breast, 1:05.20), Kristen Lewis (200 fly, 2:02.12), Sara Platzer (50 free, 23.56), Kim Vandenberg (100 free, 51.83), Taylor Spivey (200 back, 2:05.83), Brooke Winkler (200 breast, 2:21.80; 200 IM, 2:06.46), Krissy Tinney (500 free, 5:05.18) and Lindsey Buck (100 fly, 56.70).

The Bruin relays were also victorious. The 200 medley relay team of Naoko Watanabe, Leslie Hovsepian, Kim Vandenberg and Sara Platzer won in 1:45.76 while the 200 free relay team of LeAnne Cadag, Erica Shugart, Starr Airey and Beth Boehm won in 1:39.49.

UCLA will return to Pac-10 competition Friday, Jan. 31, against defending champ Stanford at Stanford. The next afternoon, Feb. 1, the Bruins will battle the California Golden Bears in Berkeley.

The Bruins' erstwhile crosstown foe, USC, will also swim its Northern California neighbors that same weekend with Coach Mark Schubert's Women of Troy taking on Cal friday and Stanford the following afternoon.

SC's men will will swim Cal and Stanford the following weekend on the road.

Usually, UCLA's men would swim the same opponents on the same weekend; but UCLA has not had a men's team since the conclusion of the 1993-94 season, when then Athletic Director Peter Dalis killed the storied program, ostensibly as a cost-saving measure, an explanation few found convincing.

Efforts to revive Bruin men's swimming have so far proved unsuccessful.
