NCAA Div. I Men: Notre Dames Falls to Pitt, Beats Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa., Jan. 18. THE University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team wrapped up a frantic three weeks of action by splitting a pair of dual meets against Pittsburgh and Villanova on Saturday afternoon.

The Irish downed the host Wildcats 168-68 and dropped the other dual meet to BIG EAST Championship favorite Pittsburgh 183-59.

After two weeks of training in Mexico over the semester break and three dual meets in two days this weekend, the Irish will relish a chance to rest up for its next meet against Northwestern at home on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Pittsburgh ended up winning all 13 events in the meet, but the Irish took 10 of 13 over Villanova.

Matt Obringer was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle in 1:44.36 and the 500 freestyle in 4:44.78.

Other winners against Villanova for Notre Dame included Jamie Lutkus (200 IM, 1:56.48), J.R. Teddy (200 fly, 1:54.61), Doug Bauman (200 back, 1:53.41) and David Moisan (200 breast, 2:09.56).

In the diving well, Andy Maggio finished third overall off the three-meter board and fourth in one-meter diving. Villanova did not enter any male divers, so Maggio did grab the Irish a number of important points for the victory.
