Navy Women Jettison Hopkins, 177-115

ANNAPOLIS, MD, Jan. 11. JOHNS Hopkins freshmen Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon) and Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield) each won two events, but it wasn't enough as the Navy women's swimming team defeated the Blue Jays, 177-115, Saturday afternoon at Legeune Hall.

The Midshipmen improved to 8-2 on the season, while Hopkins fell to 3-4.

Jenn Windstein led Navy by winning the 1650 freestyle in 17:26.70 and the 500 freestyle in 5:05.53, while Allison Moon captured the 50 freestyle in 24.84 and the 100 freestyle in 54.09.

Liu won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.16 and the 200 backstroke in 2:12.51 for the Blue Jays, while Chang took the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.97 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.88.

The only other individual event winner for Hopkins was sophomore Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), who won the 400 individual medley in 4:46.70.

The Blue Jays also won the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of freshman Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew), Liu, freshman Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View), and freshman Caitlin Kunkel (Warwick, RI/St. Mary-Academy-Bay View) won its race in 3:46.67.

Both JHU swimming teams return to action on Friday when they travel to West Chester to take on the Golden Rams and the College of New Jersey.
