Virginia’s Bosevska, FSU’s Mashburn Named ACC Swimmers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C., Dec. 9. VIRGINIA senior All-American swimmer Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/
Trinity Prep) and Florida State senior Joey Mashburn have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimmers of the Week.

Bosevska automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events and posted provisional times in three other events in helping the 11th-ranked Cavaliers finish third in the Auburn Tiger Invitational held December 5-7 in Auburn, Ala.

Bosevska won the 1650 freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:17.57. She also bettered the NCAA "A" cut in the 400 individual medley with a runner-up time of 4:13.31.

In the 200 I.M., Bosevska finished third in 2:01.54 which bettered the NCAA "B" standard. In the prelims of the 200 butterfly, Bosevska clocked a time of 2:00.83 to provisionally qualify for the NCAAs. She was eighth in the finals of the 200 fly (2:04.04) after winning the 1650 free during the same session.

Bosevska also provisionally qualified for nationals in the 200 free with her leadoff split of 1:49.19 in the 800 free relay.

Bosevska, the 2002 ACC Swimmer of the Year, holds Virginia's top times this season in the 200 free, 1650 free, 200 butterfly, 200 I.M., and 400 I.M. – each of which she established at the three-day Auburn Invitational.
Florida State's Marshburn was named ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week following his performance at the 2002 Georgia Invitational last weekend. Marshburn, a native of Marietta, Ga., posted two top ACC individual times this past weekend in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

Marshburn finished first in the 50-free with an ACC-best and NCAA B-cut time of 20.31. His time of 44.96 in the 100-yard freestyle, also a top ACC time, placed him second at the Invite and narrowly missed B-cut standards.

In addition to his individual performances, Marshburn helped Florida State finish second in a field of five teams at the invitational through his efforts in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.28) and the 400-free relay (2:58.70). With their times in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays, the Seminoles now lead the ACC in both events and have provisionally qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships.
