Tony Azevedo Repeats as MPSF Water Polo Player of the Year

WOODLAND, Calif., December 4. STANFORD sophomore Tony Azevedo (Long Beach, CA) has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Player of the Year, conference commissioner Al Beaird announced this morning.

Azevedo, a two-time MPSF Player of the Year winner, helped the Cardinal to a 22-5 record this season en route to Stanford earning its 23rd trip to the NCAA Final Four.

Azevedo leads the MPSF and Stanford with 90 goals this season and is averaging 3.5 goals per game heading into the NCAA Championship Tournament this weekend at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. He broke a Stanford record this past weekend by posting eight goals to bring his season total to 90 goals, a single season school record. He currently ranks tenth in Stanford's record book with 158 goals this season.

Joining Azevedo on the MPSF First Team is Stanford teammate Peter Hudnut, UCLA's Brett Ormsby and Brandon Brooks, California's Attila Banhidy, Pepperdine's Jesse Smith and UC Irvine's Jeff Powers.

Hudnut, who is 15th in all-time scoring for Stanford with 131 career goals, was selected to the All-MPSF First Team after a 42-goal showing in his senior season. Hudnut was also a First Team selection in 2001. He and Azevedo spent this past summer traveling with the U.S. Senior National Team.
