NCAA Div. I: Florida Gators Make Two Tasty Meals of Rival Seminoles

TALLAHASSEE, FL., November 19. IF this is what's in store for Bobby Bowden and his troops the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the veteran Florida State football coach is going to be one unhappy camper. That's the day the Gators and the Seminoles clash in football.

In perhaps an indication of what's in store for FSU come two Saturdays from now, Florida swimming coach Greg Troy's Fightin' Gators, after whomping one Atlantic Coast foe (South Carolina) at home last Friday, added another tasty ACC morsel to their plate in the form of FSU's Seminoles at the latter's Bim Shults Aquatic Center here this evening.

The Gators swept both the women's and men's dual meets, chewing up the 'Noles, 145-98, on the women's side while the men raced to a 143-100 victory.

The third-ranked Lady Gators thus remain perfect on the season by raising their record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. The men ran their record to 5-1 and 2-0 in the SEC.

BOTH FSU teams drop to 4-1 on the season.

Florida's only loss was to Coach Jon Urbancek's mighty Michigan Wolverines, who are headed for a showdown at the ol' water hole this Friday in Austin when they tangle with Coach Eddie Reese's treble-defending NCAA Champion Longhorns.

On the women's side, the 400 yard freestyle relay team consisting of junior Chantal Gibney, freshman Mary Uhle, senior Diane Tennison and senior Cara Teague scored the biggest win of the night — finishing just under seven seconds ahead of their competitors.

Junior Sara McLarty, who leads the country in the 500-1000-1650 frees, turned her talents to the 200 individual medley and swam yet another NCAA qualifying time. She won in a provisional cut of 2:04.23, but don't look for her to swim this event at NCAAs. It's on the first day, also the day of the 500, where she's defending SEC champ.

Gator sophomore Jessica Schrock recorded her first win of the season, finishing No. 1 in the 1000 freestyle in 10:10.39.

In the 200 yard butterfly, the Gators swept the event as Teague took the gold (2:02.83) and junior Casey Seland, senior Renate duPlessis and senior Kim Ecott finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Other winners for the Gators included senior Anna Chapman in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.75), sophomore Maureen Farrell in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.69) and Reid in the 500 freestyle (4:56.20).

Junior diver Kristen Connor finished second on the one-meter and three-meter springboard with scores of 263.85 and 290.70, respectively. Froshwoman Jessica Ranieri finished third (235.35) and fourth (247.95) in the one- and three-meter springboard events.

Junior Emma Dutton and sophomore Courtney McClow who each won two events led the Lady Seminoles. Dutton won her first event, the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 23.94. Following Dutton in second place was sophomore Emily Breen at 24.15. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Dutton recorded her second victory with a solid 2:19.11.

In diving action, McClow swept first-place honors on both the one- and three-meter springboards with scores of 269.18 and 297.6, respectively.

Breen scored the Lady Seminole’s final victory of the night in the 100-free with a time of 52.14.

The Lady Seminoles swam strongly all night against the Gators with impressive finishes turned in by junior Andree-Anne LeRoy in the 200-yard IM (2:05.38, second) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.37), junior Loren Hansen in the 200-free (1:52.01, second), sophomore Lisa How in the 1000-free (10:11.55, second ) and sophomore Golda Marcus in the 1000-free (10:18.03, third) and 500-free (5:02.33, third).

On the men's side, the Gators were led by their Brazilian combination of junior Carlos Jayme and sophomore Gabriel Mangabeira, as both were victorious in two events on the night. The pair were also double winners in last Friday's meet with South Carolina.

Jayme won the 200 freestyle in a 1:39.28, while also meeting the NCAA provisional mark in the event. It was the third event this season in which Jayme has met the provisional mark. The other events are the 50 and 100 frees, where he's the national leader in both (Anthony who?) Jayme's second victory came in the 100 free with a 45.18.

Mangabeira won both the 200y individual medley and the 500 freestyle in 1:53.70/4:28.64.

Sophomore Jesus Dominguez got things started as he won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:32.94. Sophomore Greg King was the winner in the 200 butterfly (1:52.36); the 200 backstroke saw sophomore Kris Wiebeck win in 1:51.59; and sophomore Zach Wilcox won the three-meter diving with a total score of 295.88.

UF was a double-winner in the relays too. The Gator 400 yard medley relay team took first in 3:22.37. The team was led by Mangabeira, Ian Chadsey, Adam Sioui and Ryan Lochte. Not a bad team but look for defending SEC 100 back champ Chris Kellem to lead off the foursome at SECs and NCAAs and have Jayme on the anchor.

Florida closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Wiebeck, Sioui, Scott Schultz and Jayme won in 3:05.10.

The Seminoles were not without outstanding swims. In the 50 free, FSU finished first, second, third and fourth, led by junior Michael Paulus’ winning time of 21.19. Following Paulus was freshman Joel Roycik (21.34) and seniors Nnamnse Ammons (21.38) and Joey Marshburn (21.40).

Near the end of the meet, the Tribe earned huge points in the 200 breast thanks to first, second and third-place finishes. Senior Justin Betts touched the wall first at 2:06.06 followed by juniors Wickus Nienaber (2:06.51) and Tal Stricker (2:07.18).

The Seminoles’ final win of the night came on the one-meter springboard which sophomore Louie Gagnet won with a score of 304.73.

FSU earned important points in the individual events from junior Devin Crock in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.77, second), sophomore Alan Ribeiro in the 200-free (1:43.28, third) and 500-free (4:39.43, third), freshman Chris Vythoulkas in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.71, second) and freshman Brent Campbell in the 200-back (1:55.52, third).

The Seminoles will now travel to Las Vegas on Friday, Nov. 22, to take on UNLV and BYU and then to Salt Lake City on Saturday, Nov. 23, to face Utah.

Florida will be back in action Saturday at 1 PM EST at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium when the Gators host SEC powerhouse rival Georgia.

If the Gators sweep that meet then they'll prove they're definite contenders for national honors.
