Stanford Signs Three to Letters of Intent

STANFORD, Calif., November 14. THE Stanford women's swimming and diving program has announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent to attend Stanford in 2003-04.

The three incoming swimmers are Morgan Hentzen (La Habra Heights, CA/La Serna HS), Becky Kreutzjans (Poway, CA/Poway HS) and Desiree Stahley (Orlando, FL/Lake Highland HS).

"The biggest need our team has is in the freestyle events, both sprint and distance," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick about the three incoming freestylers. "This class addresses that need with its enormous potential and will make a significant contribution to Stanford if the group comes along like they and I believe they will."

Hentzen has already established herself as one of the nation's top distance freestylers as a member of the Industry Hills Aquatic Club coached by Richard Shipherd. She finished third in the 1500 meter free at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships in her most recent international competition. Hentzen was also third in the 800 meter free and sixth in the 400 meter free at the 2002 Summer Senior Nationals after placing third in the 400 and eighth in the 800 at the 2002 Spring Senior Nationals.

"Morgan has represented the United States well in international competition as a young swimmer," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick. "She is being recruited in our area of biggest need in the distance freestyle and has the potential to continue the distance legacy established at Stanford over the past four years by Jessica Foschi."

Kreutzjans has never lost an individual high school event, while earning four All-American honors and winning six San Diego CIF section crowns during her first three prep seasons. She is also an eight-time qualifier for Senior Nationals and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials in the 200 meter backstroke. She was a member of the 2002 Junior Nationals Open Water team and has already qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials. Kreutzjans swims for North Coast Aquatics coached by Jeff Pease.

"Becky has the potential to be an effective swimmer at the NCAA level in the 200, 500 and 1650 yard freestyle," said Quick. "She should have the opportunity to contribute immediately next season."

Stahley is a 12-time All-American and anchored a national prep champion 200 yard medley relay team during her sophomore season. As a junior last year, she finished second in the 100 and third in the 200 yard free at the Florida state meet. Stahley, a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier, has broken Junior National records in the 50 yard free and as a member of an 800 yard free relay team as a member of Trinity Aquatics coached by Rob Mirande.

"Desiree will add a lot of potential and quality depth to our sprint and middle distance free events," added Quick. "She has an excellent range of events and her ability to help us in the freestyle relays is going to be a very significant part of our future success at Stanford."

Stanford (2-0) is ranked second in the nation in the latest CSCAA national released November 12. The Cardinal opened its season with a pair of dual meet wins in a double dual meet victory over USC and Texas on November 1-2. Stanford next competes by hosting Auburn and Pacific in a double dual meet November 22-23. Stanford has won nine national titles and eight NCAA crowns, including six during the 1990¹s.
