NCAA Div. I Women: Nebraska Breaks Losing Streak, Beats Wyoming

LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 8. THE Nebraska women's swimming and diving team broke an eight meet losing streak en route to a 141-100 win over Wyoming Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool.

Nebraska has no men's team. It was eliminated two seasons ago by AD Bill Byrne who claimed, falsely, the cut was being made for financial reasons. Byrne previously had eliminated both men's and women's swimming at the University of Oregon.

Topday, the NU women won nine of the 13 events contested as well as earning six runner-up finishes. The win, Pablo Morales' first as NU's head coach, improved the Huskers to 1-4 on the season.

Morales was pleased with the team's performance. "We tend to look at wins and losses as a good measuring stick," Morales said, "but equally important is our progress in terms of skill and conditioning. We really try to focus on how the team is performing and in terms of achieving objectives. We have been lucky to compete against national opponents so far this season, which gave us the confidence to stand up and compete strong."

In the diving well, freshman Amie Buoy swept both springboards, taking the one meter with a score of 252.98 and the three meter with a score of 271.50. Fellow freshman Becky Johnson placed second on both boards as well (one meter, 232.88; three meter, 244.05).

Junior Angie Matheu won the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 53.70. Matheu also finished second in the 50-yard free (24.63) as well as having a hand in NU's winning 200-yard medley relay (1:49.35).

The Huskers also got wins from freshmen Alex King (200-yard free, 1:56.31), Mackenzie Clark (1,000-yard free, 10:36.92) and Danielle Erickson (100-yard back, (58.96).

In her first competition of the season, freshman Lana Baker won the 100-yard breast in 1:06.36. Sophomore Diana Torres also added a win in the 100-yard fly, touching the wall in 59.56. Erickson, Baker, Matheu and freshman Kate Dulgar also each swam a leg on NU's winning 200-yard medley relay (1:49.35).

Adding runner-up finishes were Clark (500-yard free, 5:11.97), freshmen Esmie Holderman (1,000-yard free, 10:42.25) and Courtney Petersen (200-yard IM, 2:11.14).

The Huskers are next in action on Nov. 22, when they travel to Minneapolis to compete at the Minnesota Invitational.
