Swimming Retakes the Lead in Oregon Voting; We Still Need Your Support

Phillip Whitten

EUGENE, Ore., October 29. IN A see-saw battle, Swimming has , once again, retaken the lead from gymnastics in the voting on the University of Oregon web site to add a women's sport to the university's offerings.

When we first ran the story of this vote on SwimInfo, gymnastics was well in the lead. Later, the gymnastics community organized and began voting, pulling ahead of swimming, while water polo moved into third place, from sixth, and was right behind swimming. After our second story, swimming retook the lead.

Here is the question on the Oregon web site and the current vote totals:

What current NCAA women's sport would you like Oregon to add?(No. of schools sponsoring sport in parenthesis)

1. Swimming & Diving (184) – 37.0% (40,757 votes)
2. Gymnastics (64) – 34.8% (38,359 votes)
3. Water Polo (29) – 25.4% (28,008 votes)
4. Lacrosse (77) – 0.7% (817 votes)
5. Rowing (84) – 0.7% (751 votes)

Swimming should win this vote: there are more registered swimmers in this country than regsitered athletes in gymnastics, water polo or the other two sports.

We have the lead again, but the issue is far from settled. We need swimming fans to continue voting!

YOU can help create a new Women's Swimming and Diving program at Oregon by voting at the school's web site below.
