NCAA Div. I: Florida Swims Past Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA., October 26. THE Fightin' Florida Gators women's and men's swimming and diving teams remained perfect in the 2002-03 season with a sweep of Penn State at McCoy Natatorium here this evening.

The Lady Gators, coming off a convincing win over Big 10 foe Michigan Thursday in Ann Arbor, raced to a one-sided 141-87 victory over the Nittany Lions, who won
their first-ever Big 10 title last February at Indiana.

The Gator men defeated Penn State, 131-96.

The women’s team — defending Southeast Conference champs — won all 10 events it contested as Forida improved its record to 4-0. Florida also finished with top times in the three events it swam exhibition. A trio of Gators splashed to McCoy Natatorium records and five swam NCAA provisional qualifying times.

The Gator men improved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in their history against the Nittany Lions. The Gators opened up a commanding 131-37 lead with three events left, so Florida coach Gregg Troy exhibitioned the remaining three events. The men won every event they did not exhibition, and also recorded the top times in the events that they exhibitioned.

The Lady Gators opened the meet with a 400 yard medley relay win. The squad of of sophomore Maureen Farrell, freshman Vipa Bernhardt, senior Cara Teague and junior Chantal Gibney began by setting a McCoy Natatorium record with its 3:44.70. The previous record was 3:46.24 set by Penn State in 2001.

Junior Sara McLarty then set a pool record in the 1000 freestyle with her nation-leading 9:41.53. That No. 1 clocking goes along with her national No. 1s in the 500 and 1650 frees and 200 fly too. Freshman Jamie Reid, an Orlando resident (down the road a piece from Gainesville) followed with a pool record and nation-leading 200 back clocking of 1:58.79. That time is
just off her career-best of 1:58.44 from a senior meet in Federal Way, WA. a couple of years ago when she was training with the Puyallup Aquatic Club — also home to Olympic 100 breast gold medalist Megan Quann.

Sophomore Rebecca Harper won the 200 butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 2:00.86, just missing the pool record of 2:00.48. Harper's pr is 1:55.66 from last season's NCAAs at Texas that got her the
silver medal behind Stanford's Shelly Ripple, and that time is also just shy of the Gator record of 1:55.44 by Tracy Caulkins that she swam to win NCAAs at Indianapolis 18 years ago.

Bernhardt swam two NCAA provo cuts as an exhibition competitor in the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:03.99 and 2:15.76, respectively.

Another Orlando native, junior Nicole Bolt, highlighted the diving portion, winning both the one- and three-meter springboard competitions with scores
of 294.52 and 335.25.

Other Gator No. 1s included rookie Mary Uhle, a
native of Germany, in the 200 freestyle (1:51.29); Farrell in the 50 freestyle (24.09); froshwoman Danielle Duncan and Gibney in the 100 freestyle (51.50).

& & & & &

On the men’s side, senior Ian Chadsey fought off a cold to break the pool record in the 200 yard breaststroke with a national No. 1 2:00.61. The
old record was 2:01.03. Chadsey's pr is 1:59.26 from thje '02 SECs at Arkansas so to go 2:00+ in October msut be encouraging indeed.

Freshman Mac Warren won his initial collegiate victory in the 200 IM with a 1:53.70. Junior sprinter Carlos Jayme met the NCAA "B" cut in the 100 freestyle for the second time this season with a time of 44.77. Jayme became a double-winner when he was also victorious in the 50 (20.62). He edged teammate (and fellow Brazilian) Gabriel Mangabeira by three hundredths of a second, as Mangabeira finished second with a 20.65. Mangabeira came up with a gold of his own in the 200 backstroke with a 1:47.36.

Other Gator winners included Scott Kaufmann in the 1000 free (9:21.20); Kris Wiebeck in the 200 free (1:39.74) and Greg King in the 200 fly (1:52.98).

Freshman diver Chris Comfort qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones on the 3-meter board with a point-total of 326.85. Sophomore diver Zach Wilcox just missed the school record of 345.75 on the 1-meter board with his first-place score of 342.60. Wilcox also scored a 320.70 in the 3-meter. Wilcox has met the qualifying mark on both boards in all three meets this season.

The Gators’ 400-yard medley relay B team of Chris Kellam, Chadsey, Mangabeira and Jayme won the event in 3:24.58.

Kellam is defending SEC backstroke champ at both 100 and 200 yards.

"The University of Florida has an outstanding tradition and an outstanding team. They out-classed us in every single phase of today's event," said Penn State women's and men's head coach Bill Dorenkott — last season's Big 10 women's Coach of the Year..

Florida is off for the next two weeks before hosting SEC foe South Carolina Nov. 15. They then travel to Tallahassee to take on intra-state rival Florida State Nov. 19.

Did somebody say, "Break up the Gators?"
