NCAA Div. I Women: SMU Holds Small Lead Over Cal After Day 1 of SMU Classsic

DALLAS, TX., October 25 — The SMU Mustangs galloped into the lead but Cal is hot on their heels after opening night of the 9th Annual Southern Methodist University Swimming & Diving Classic.

The meet is underway at SMU's venerable on-campus Perkins Natatorium, also site of next February's Dalls Morning News men's Invitational and the Mustangs' home pool.

Coach Steve Collins' Lady Mustangs splashed to three victories in nine events this evening, but Cal got four golds to edge the defending WAC (Western Athletic Conference) champions in that category.

SMU's advantage is a narrow 170-158.5 over Coach Teri McKeever's Cal Golden Bears. Third is Florida State with 141 points while UCLA is fourth and Alabama fifth.

The Mustangs took the lead following the night's second event, the 400 IM, won by their very own Andrea Cassidy (4:20.49) and then never looked back.

"We are excited after our performance. We are swimming great," said Collins. "We were really strong in every race and that has given us a big advantage today."

In the first event, the 400 yard medley, the SMU team of Alenka Kejzar, Corrie Clark, Georgiana Lee and Laura Pomeroy placed second to Cal with a 3:44.50. Kejzar was a finalist at last summer's European Championships in the backstrokes for Slovenia and Clark is an All-America transfer from Penn State, where she helped lead the Nittany Lions to their first Big 10 title last February. Lee is a British Olympic veteran and Pomeroy is a Canadian national team member.

Cal, getting a solid 57.5 leadoff leg from rookie Helen Silver, won in 3:34.35. Sydney Olympian Staciana Stitts had a strong breast leg (1:02.37), Natalie Coughlin split a sizzling 52.68 for the fly segment and Daniele Beck anchored in 50.85.

The Divine Ms. C won both races she entered, the 100 back and 100 fly, setting meet records in each too (54.53-52.99). The old 100 fly meet standard was 54.14 by former Lady Mustang (and this year's Euro 100 fly champ) Martina Moravcova, who is still the U.S. Open/NCAA record-holder in the 200 yard free. (Former Florida star and Barcelona Olympic gold medalist
Nicole Haislett holds the American record.)

Coughlin's times also easily surpassthe NCAA auto cuts of 55.15/54.14. Of course, she just happens to be American/NCAA record-holder in both races too with clockings of 50.01 and 49.97 from last March's NCAA Championships at the Texas Swimming Center.

Froshwoman Silver also helped the Cal cause by winning the 100 back consols in a seasonal-pr 57.14, while Stitts took the 100 breast gold.

(Coughlin also holds American/NCAA records in the 200 back and 100 free. At last summer's U.S. Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale, she became the first — and only — woman ever under a minute in the 100 back, thus all but guaranteeing her World Swimmer of the Year honors as well.)

The Mustangs scored big points in the 200 free, sweeping the consolation and championship finals. Senior Lisa Wanberg took the Consolation win (1:51.24), while her sister, Lotta Wanberg, also a senior, racked up the Championship final victory (1:49.00) — or was it the other way 'round?

Junior transfer Clark won the consolation 100 fly with a 56.05. Her pr is a 54.06 from NCAAs at East Meadow two years ago. She then came back to take runner-up honors in the 100 breast (1:03.58) and teammate Nordenstam picked up her second consols victory of the night in that race too, going 1:05.39.

Cal's Stitts was 100 breast champ in a nice early-season 1:02.49, fastest nationally.

The other evening's winners included Florida State sophomore Jennie Lyes in the 50 free (23.80) and Alabama's Lana Bassham on the 1-meter board (279.60).

"The level of competition here this weekend is so strong." Collins continued. "Having an athlete like Natalie Coughlin, an American and world record-holder, compete here raises the bar even more."

The meet continues this evening at Perkins Natatorium on the campus of SMU, starting at 7:30 PM CDT.
