Women’s Water Polo: US Crushes Brazil 14-2; Canada Dumps Japan 5-2

PALO ALTO, July 5. THE United States and Canada both got into the win column of the 2002 Holiday Cup Women's
International Water Polo Tournament Friday.

Team USA took a 4-0 first quarter lead over Brazil and kept the pressure on in a 14-2 victory. The American attack was spread around, as 10 different players found the net. Ellen Estes, Ericka Lorenz and team captain Heather Moody tossed in two goals each. The United States was effective in player-advantage situations, converting six-of-nine opportunities in the
match. Nicolle Payne notched five saves in net for the USA.

In the evening's opening match, Canada erased an early 1-0 deficit and held a comfortable 4-1 halftime lead over Japan. After Japan closed the gap to 4-2 in the third quarter, Canada netted an insurance goal in the fourth for a 5-2 win. Sandra Lize led Canada with a pair of goals.
