More Good News! Centenary College to Add Men’s, Women’s Swimming This Fall

SHREVEPORT, LA., June 10. CENTENARY COLLEGE in Shreveport, LA., will be adding men’s and women’s swim teams starting next fall.

The addition of swimming to the athletic program increases the total number of varsity sports to 18, more than any other school in North Louisiana (Grambling is next with 16). Butch Jordan, veteran City of Shreveport Swim Team (COSST) coach, will coach both the men’s and women’s teams.

Centenary, the smallest Division I school in the nation with about 1,000 students, is the first school in the area to add swimming as a varsity port. “There has been a void in this area in the past when it comes to swimming, but Centenary has taken care of that. Now the youth of the region can watch swimming first-hand and know that they can continue to swim after high school,” said Jordan.

Centenary is an indepedndent school, but the swim team will compete in the New South Intercollegiate Conference, which is comprised of Div. II schools such as Delta State and Henderson State. Negotiations are underway, however, for the school to join the Mid-Continent Conference.

The addition of swimming to the athletic lineup at Centenary, combined with major renovations that have already taken place, reflects the commitment the college has made to athletics. “This is a significant step forward for Centenary athletics and the college,” said AD Dr. David Bedard.
