Diablo Valley Sweeps Cal Community College Titles

By Bill Bell

PASADENA, Calif., May 4. IT may have been Derby Day in Louisville, but it was Diablo Valley Day in the city of Roses as DVC swept to both the women's and
men's swimming and diving championships at the California Community College state meet here.

The three-day competition concluded early this evening at Pasadena City College's brand, spanking new multi megabuck outdoor 50 m pool, configured for a 25-yard course with the bulkhead in place.

Having the meet at PCC marked a homecoming of sorts, as the last time the competition was here was nearly three decades ago (1973).

Diablo Valley College is located in Pleasant Hill, an East Bay suburb about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. Coach Rick Millington's DVC women's team ran away with its title, scoring 439 points to runners-up Riverside City College's 334. Last year's defending champs, Golden West College (Huntington Beach, CA.), was third with 330.5 points.

On the men's side, Coach Jack Flanagan's DVC men's team was a 458-371 victor over neighboring Cuesta College, with Golden West third here too (261).

Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honors went to Elizabeth Klein of Golden West, who set a state and national community college record en route to the 50 back title. (The Cal CC meet has the 50 and 100 stroke events for women plus the 100 individual medley while the men swim the traditional 100-200 stroke races and the 200-400 IMs.)

For the men, Outstanding Swimmer honors were shared by DVC's Chris Horner, 100 free champ, and Cuesta's Tanner Sheldon, winner of the 400 IM. Horner's DVC
teammate, Mike Tuck, won high-point honors as did GWC's Klein.

Diabo Valley women's boss Millington was named Coach of the Year while College of Merced's retiring Bob Pollitt was named men's Coach of the Year. Politt is hanging up his whistle after 25 years at the Merced helm.
