Auburn's Tigers Can Clinch First-Ever Women's NCAA Title at Prelims, Day 3 of Women's College Champs -- March 23, 2002

By Phillip Whitten

AUSTIN, Texas, March 23. WITH one day left at the fastest women's NCAA Championship ever, Auburn stands on the verge of winning its first- ever NCAA title in any women's sport.

If the Tigers can muster some roars this morning, this evening will be less a contest and more a coronation. As we've been staying, looking for the Tigers to do it. They are on as on can be--with virtually very swimmer going best times in almost every event.

Georgia, the three-time defending champion, is about to be dethroned, but the Dawgs have done themselves proud. "If we swim this well and still get second," said head Dawg Jack Bauerle, "I could not have asked anything more from these kids.'

The real battle will be for third, between Stanford, Arizona, Texas and Southern Cal. Many of Texas' points, however, may be in jeopardy, due to an ongoing dispute between the University and the NCAA regarding Joscelin Yeo's eligibility. Yeo had been declared ineligible before the meet, but a judge issued a temporary restraining order that allowed her to compete. An appeal by the NCAA on Thursday was denied. More on this later.

Meanwhile, there are some great stories today: Natalie Coughlin will go for another American record in the 200 yard backstroke; Georgia's Maritza Correia goes for a sprint double in the 100 free (she won the 50 on Thursday); Tara Kirk meets Agnes Kovacs in the 200 breast; and in her last individual college swim, the 200 fly, Shelly Ripple goes for her first individual title. This scribbler thinks she'll get it--and boldly predicts she'll break Mary T's unbreakable american mark of 1;52.99 that has stood forever.

But first, the prelims....

Only natalie Coughlin could "cruise" a 1:53. looking like nothing but a woman out for a leisurely stroll, Coughlin split 55.63 and touched in 1:53.83. She wasn't breathing hard. i doubt that her pulse got over 70.

will the Auburn Tigers come out fighting today? That question was answered right away, as freshman Margaret Hoelzer swam a lifetime best to qualify second in 1:55.07; another froshy, Kristy Coventry did the same and qualified seventh.

200 yard breaststroke
This event should feature one of the epic battles of the meet. In one lane will stand Tara Kirk, 100 breast winner and American record-holder. Last year she led this race for 199 yards, before being out-touched by Arizona's Amanda Beard.

Beard, the 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, is gone this year. In her place is the 2000 Olympic gold medalist -- and reigning World Champion -- Arizona State's Agnes Kovacs, a freshman from Hungary. At Pac-10s, Kovacs won by a touch, as the two rivals swam the second and third fastest times in history. Kristy Kowal's American /NCAA record is definitely on the endangered species list.

Just to make things interesting, Alabama's Anne Poleska, a German who is the current European short course champion, could challenge them both.

Prelims went according to form, with Kirk qualifying first, Kovacs scon and Poleska fourth. Georgia's Ashley roby, who led Kovacs for 175 yards, qualified third.

It took 2:12.43 to make finals, 2:14.02 to make consols.

400 yard freestyle relay
By the time the 400 free rolls around tonight, Auburn will have been crowned NCAA champions. But that won't keep the Tigers and Dawgs from going at it tooth and claw.

They went stroke-for-stroke in heat 3 this morning, with Auburn qualifying first in 3:16.08 and Georgia second in 3:16.65. But Georgia's Correia visibly eased up in the final 5 yards, so the Dawgs have a faster swim in them.

Nine teams broke 3:20, with Stanford's 3:19.66 placing the Cardinal ninth.

Texas' American record of 3:14.52 i in jeopardy.
