Auburn Swimmers to Honor Mike Spann; Trust Fund Set Up

AUBURN, Alabama, March 15. THE Auburn men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be honoring 1992 Auburn alumnus Mike Spann, who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan late last year, during the upcoming NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The Championships will be held March 21-23 for the women in Austin, Texas, and March 28-30 in Athens, Ga., for the men.

The team will be placing Spann's initials on their swim caps to honor, what is believed to be, the first CIA officer killed in a U.S. military operation since the Vietnam War.

Spann was in the process of gathering intelligence from Taliban prisoners at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Shannon, his three small children and his two sisters. Mike Spann is the son of
Johnny and Gail Spann of Winfield, Ala.

Spann's family would like for everyone to please remember his young children. A trust fund has been established at the following address:
Johnny Michael Spann Memorial Trust Fund
Citizen's Bank
PO Box 550
Winfield, AL 35594
