NCAA Women’s Water Polo: ASU Goes 2-3 on Road Trip

TEMPE, Ariz., March 19. ARIZONA State's women's water polo team completed its competitive spring break trip to New York with a 2-3 record, moving to 7-9 overall in its inaugural season.

ASU suffered losses against varsity teams from St. Francis College, Iona College and Hartwick College, while earning wins versus Villanova University and Marist College.

In their first game of the trip (March 13), the un devils fell to St. Francis by the score of 13-11. After falling behind 5-2 through two quarters, ASU
outscored the Terriers down the stretch but failed to catch their opponent. Freshman Bryn Kuech and sophomore Ashley Orzalli accounted for three goals apiece, while senior Kim Yost and sophomore Lena
Soghomonian had two each. The Sun Devils allowed goals in five of seven 6-on-5 situations, but senior goalie Nancy Holmes tallied 13 saves.

In the second game (March 14), Iona outscored ASU 3-2 all four periods to hand the Sun Devils a 12-8 defeat. Yost had two goals to go along with four assists and four steals and junior Kelly Prezkop also scored twice. Competing in a shallow-end pool, Holmes managed 13 saves while picking up her fifth assist of the season and first since the opening weekend.

Facing Marist in the third game (March 15), ASU overwhelmed the Red Foxes 11-3, with six Sun Devils contributing goals. Prezkop had a team-high three goals and three steals, while Soghomonian, Yost and
freshman Lauren Jacobson scored two goals apiece.

In the first of two games March 16, ASU clashed with Villanova, marking a reunion of sorts for head coach Vicki Gorman who coached the Wildcats' club team from 1995-97. After being held scoreless through the first
period, ASU answered with four goals in the second and five in the third en route to a 10-8 win. Yost scored five goals in as many attempts, while also picking up five steals.

In the second game of the day and the fifth of the week, the Sun Devils lost to Hartwick 14-6. Holmes managed only six saves while the Hawks scored in all four of its 6-on-5 situations. Kuech led the defense with five steals, while Orzalli provided the offense with three goals.

ASU will be back in action this weekend, this time on the West Coast with two games at the University of La Verne, March 23. In addition to challenging La Verne, the Sun Devils will also take on Chapman University in the first of what will be two meetings this season.
