NCAA Div. II Champs: After Day 2, Truman State Women Lengthen Lead, Cal State Bakersfield Men Hang On

ORLANDO, Fla., March 14. TRUMAN State's Lady Bulldogs are in command after the conclusion of Day Two's competition at the NCAA Division II women's
Championships here, maintaining a 61-point advantage over Drury.

However, on the men's side Coach Bob Steele's Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, double-defending champs, are ahead by a mere four-point margin
(279-275) over North Dakota's Fighting Sioux.

Truman's ladies claimed a pair of victories while increasing their lead, which had been 37 after the first day's races (382-321). Bakersfield also scored a pair of victories but North Dakota was still able cut the CSUB lead from 19 points after Day One.

After establishing three NCAA Division II Championship records during the opening day of competition, Truman State set only a single record today. However, the
'Dawgs shaved more than a second off Air Force's previous record in the 400 medley relay (3:49.99) with their 3:48.85.

The single individual woman's standard went to West Chester's Corey Dennis, who defended her 100 fly title and splashed to a record-breaking 55.42 win tonight. The old record-holder and her time? None other than Furman's Angel Myers, with a 55.82 from 1986. Myers of course went on to become an Olympic gold medalist (relays) for the United States at both the Barcelona
and Atlanta Olympics.

Last season Dennis, who's also defending 200 fly champ, won in 56.31.

Other event winners included Drury University in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.81-1:34.17 over Truman), North Dakota's Janice Berry in the 400 individual medley (4:22.72) and Diana Betsworth of Truman State in the 200 freestyle (1:49.04 after having swum a record-setting 1:48.75 in the prelims).

On the men's side, Bakersfield's Vlasta Burda and Jacob Fraire plus Ben Michaelson of Southern Connecticut State all claimed their second victory of
the championships.

Burda, who set a championship record in the 1000 freestyle last evening, showed he also can swim shorter distances as he won the 200 freestyle with a
pr 1:38.55. Last season he was second (1:39+).

After winning the 200 IM Wednesday, Fraire went out fast and held on to win the 400 IM with in a pr 3:56.90. Indianapolis' Orel Oral was hot on his heels (3:57.08). The latter was defending IM champ in both and won last year in 1:48.40-3:57.50.

Michaelson saved the best for the last as, after winning the 50 free in a pr 20.11, he defended his 100 fly title with a stunning 46.74 record swim (21.95-24.79). That's a Division 1 qualifying time and knocked more than a second off his old record and pr 47.77 from the '01 Championship.

No other DII swimmer had ever been under 48.0 before Michaelson came along and he's only a junior too. Watch out, Ian Crocker, you've got company!

North Dakota freshman Fernando Alves was second in 47.31 (22.00-25.31), making him the second fastest man in Div. II history.

Missouri-Rolla won the 200 freestyle relay while North Dakota claimed victory in the 400 medley.

In the one-meter diving, Shawn Colten of Clarion University claimed top honors with a score of 453.10. Robb Pendergrass of California State-Bakersfield was second with a score of 419.85.
