Dutch Stars Inky, Hoogie to Miss World Short Course Championships

AMSTERDAM, March 12. HOLLAND'S two swimming superstars, Inge De Bruijn and Pieter van den Hoogenband, have decided to pass on next month's World Short Course Championships in Moscow, according to Oene Rusticus of Zwemkroniek.

De Bruijn was a triple gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games and at last year's World Championships in Japan. She holds the long course world records in the 50 and 100m freestyle and 50 and 100m butterfly.
Van den Hoogenband won two gold medals and a bronze in Sydney, setting the current world record in the 100m free and beating Australia's Ian Thorpe for gold at 200 meters.

The Dutch team competing in Moscow will consist of only four members: Johan Kenkhuis (50 free) and Chantal Groot (50 free, 50 fly), both from the Top Zwemmen Amsterdam team; Suze Valen (50 back, 100 back), from AZ&PC Amersfoort, and Inge Dekker (50 fly), from HZ&PC Heerenveen.

Valen is coached by Ad van de Ven, a 2000 Olympic
coach. She missed qualification for Sydney because she had been ill. At the Universiade in Beijing last year, she won the bronze medal in the 50 free.

De Bruijn, van den Hoogenband, and the other top Dutch swimmers are preparing for the European Long Course Championships. The Dutch Long Course Nationals from April 18 to 21 are the major qualifying event for the Europeans.
