NCAA Div. I: At Superfast SECs, Auburn Edges Florida for Men’s Title, Florida Upsets Georgia to Take Women’s Crown

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Feb. 23. OH, those Tigers and oh, them Fightin' Gators!

Coach David Marsh's powerful Auburn Tigers' men's team, ranked second nationally, sent a message to top-ranked Stanford's Cardinal this evening with a hard-fought 753-744 win at the 66th annual Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships here.

It was Auburn's sixth-consecutive men's triumph and eighth in the last nine years. Only Coach John Trembley's Tennessee Vols in 1996 have been able to
tame the Tigers since their initial win in '94. However, Auburn's got a ways to go before it matches Florida's streak of 13 consecutive men's titles from
'56 through '68.

And unlike the Gators, who have 16 SEC women's championships along with their 33 men's crowns, Auburn has yet to win its first distaff title.

Men's Events
On the men's side Auburn parlayed its superior depth to the title, as the Tigers won nary a race on the final night, although had their 400 free relay not been disqualified when anchor Ryan Wochomurka jumped they conceivably could have won.

In any event, the Tigers' highest finish was in the 1650 free, where Kevin Clements was runner-up to Georgia's Robert Margalis, 15:03.27-15:05.93, with
both swimmers making the NCAA "B" cut.

Clements is a senior who had a fine meet at last summer's Goodwill Games and won the 500 free and 400 IM earlier here. Margalis was a member of theU.S.'
World Championship squad at Fukuoka but was reportedly suffering the aftereffects of the flu here.

If he's healthy at Athens (site of next month's men's NCAA Division 1 Championships) he could be a contender for golds in the 500 free, 400 IM and — perhaps — the mile.

South Carolina senior Zsolt Gaspar, a Hungarian Olympian, was the meet's big winner, taking a triple crown via victories in the 50 free, the 100 fly and
the 100 free.

His prelim time in the 50 (19.54) is just .01 off the USC school-record he set last year at Tuscaloosa en route to winning and also his pr. The SEC meet record is 19.35 by Auburn's Aaron Ciarla, while the all-time quickest SEC half-century is 19.16 by former Tiger Brett Hawke, an Australian Olympian at Sydney.

Interestingly, Hawke's time was done in the prelims of the '97 NCAAs in Minneapolis, where Texas' Neil Walker was top qualifier in 19.08. However, at night it was all Hawke, winning in 19.19 to Walker's 19.25.

In the 100 fly Friday night, he won in a nation-leading 46.60, just off his pr 46.58 that won SECs two seasons ago and not far off the SEC record of 46.40 by Auburn's John Hargis from the '97 Championships.

This evening Gaspar swept to an SEC meet-record 42.89 100 free win, fastest-nationally. (However, the Pac-10s, with double-defending NCAA champ Anthony Ervin of Cal, who's also co-AR holder with his 41.80 that won last season, won't have their meet for another two weeks.)

In any event, the "Hustling Hungarian's" next goal will be the all-time SEC record of 42.38 by Auburn's Rowdy Gaines — a teammate of curent Auburn coach
Marsh — from the 1981 NCAAs at Harvard. Mr. Gaines would go on to win a triple golden crown of his own at the Los Angeles Olympics three years later, with firsts in the 100 free and anchoring the 400 medley-free relays.

Gaspar also holds the 'SC school-record in the 200 fly with a 1:43.88 from the '01 NCAAs in Colelge Station — 18th all-time perfomer. The guy is no slouch — he's for real — and could give Ervin a run for the money in the 50-100 frees and also put heat on defending NCAA champ Ian Crocker of Texas in the 100 fly.

Florida's Carlos Jayme (43.58) and Auburn frosh Wochomurka (pr 43.73) third.

The Tigers also scored a fifth when Matthew Kidd touched in 44.07. The NCAA auto standard is 43.64 and consideration is 44.94.

Florida soph Chris Kellam won the 200 back (pr 1:42.48) and the win came at the expesne of Georgia's World Champion team member Marc Lindsay, who was
second in 1:43.31. The latter's pr is 1:42.04 that won him the bronze at NCAAs last season.

The 200 breast was won by Georgia soph Kyle Salyards in a pool-record 1:56.72 with Auburn junior Justin Caron second (1:57.73). Salyards' time is an NCAA auto cut while Caron makes the "B" standard.

Alabama freshman Stefan Gherghel, a Romanian Olympian, won the 200 fly in a pool-record 1:44.73, also an "A" cut. The 'Bama school record is 1:44.07 by LA Olympic 200 fly champ Jon Sieben, an Australian who set the record en route to the NCAA title a half-year later.

Florida's 2:52.74 for the 400 freestyle relay capped a remarkable evening for the Gators, whose time is No. 1 nationally and an SEC meet record.

Auburn was the old record-holder with its 2:53.28 from the '97 meet.

Jayme's 43.05 was the fastest leadoff and No.2 nationally behind Gaspar's 42.89. Kidd led off for the Tigers in a pr 43.85 and Gaspar had the fastest
overall split with his 42.06 second leg for the Gamecocks.

Are you listening, Mr. Ervin?

Women's Events
The Lady Gators added title No. 16 tonight and thus snapped Georgia's streak of five-straight wins, which began with the arrival of superstar Kristy Kowal at The Dawg Pound in the fall of 1996. Gator Coach Greg Troy's ladies took the measure of Coach Jack Bauerle's Lady Bulldogs, 742.5-719, with Auburn a close third (693.5).

The victory was Troy's first SEC title since arriving in Gainesville three years ago from Bolles School in Jacksonville. There he developed innumerable prep All-Americas, including Olympic gold medalist (100 fly)
Anthony Nesty, who edged Matt Biondi by .01 at Seoul in 1988; and University of Michigan All-America sprinter Gustavo Borges, the only man to win the NCAA Division 1 100 free four-consecutive seasons.

Nesty is now a Gator assistant so the two are rather well acquainted.

Troy won SEC Men's Coach of the Year honors his first season in Gainesville, and now adds the women's honor after his Gators' win this evening.

* * * * *

The women's race, which Georgia led going into the final night of competition, may well have been decided in the first event, the 1650 free, when the Gators went a one, a two and a three — plus spots nine and 15.

Sophomore Sara McLarty, 500 free champ earlier, won in an NCAA auto cut of 16:12.20. Teammates Janelle Atkinson (16:14.25) and Meredith Green (16:14.77) finished second and third. Auburn's Magda Dyszkiewicz was fourth (16:32.16).

McLarty's time is her pr while Atkinson has a pr of 16:04.42 that won SECs last season, and has been 16:05+ earlier this season — No. 1 nationally.

In the 200 back, Auburn froshwoman Margaret Hoelzer, disregarding the maxim that "rookies are to be seen but not heard," raced to a pool and Auburn school-record 1:55.35 200 back title — third nationally.

To keep her company, Tiger teammate Kristy Coventry, another froshwoman and a Zimbabwean Olympian, took runner-up honors with her pr 1:55.39, fourth on the national scene. Florida rookie Maureen Farrell, a Southern Claifornia native where she was all-CIF last season at Alemany High, was third (1:57.49).

(She forsook the "wonders" of LA for Gainesville?)

The SEC meet record is 1:55.27 by Georgia's Keegan Walkley from the '00 meet and the all-time SEC standard is Walkley's 1:53.22 that won NCAAs in '98 at
Minneapolis.

On the victory stand, both Hoelzer and Coventry were overheard to proclaim in unison, "Natalie who?" (just kidding!)

Auburn's Taylor Spivey won the consols.

In the 100 free, Georgia's Maritza Correia, 50 free champ in an SEC record 22.31, showed she can go a mean 100 too with her SEC-record 48.29 win, second nationally. Her old pr was 48.49 from NCAAs last season that won her the silver medal.

The old conference record was 48.40 by The 'Dawgs Courtney Shealy from '00, and Correia's time is second nationally to Cal's Natalie Couglin's 47.77.

Correia, who was runner-up last night to teammate Stefanie Williams in the 200 free, was out in 23.26, far and away the fastest 50 of the field.

Williams, rreturning the favor, was second (48.64) while Auburn's Eileen Coporropa — a Panamanian Olymnpian who's a soph for the Tigers — was third
(48.91). That time matches her pr from this meet last season where she led off Auburn's 400 free relay.

Florida scored a fourth, sixth and eighth with Leah Martindale's 49.59 (49.53p) the Gators' highest finisher.

Alabama scored its lone win when sophomore Anne Poleska defended her 200 breast title with a 2:09.20 win, just off her meet record 2:08.85 from last season, that is both her pr and the 'Bama school-record. She currently ranks second nationally with a 2:08.03, a time converted from short course meters.

The national leader is Arizona State's Agnes Kovacs, defending Olympic and world 200 breast champ, but it is uncertain if she'll be eligible for NCAAs. More will be known of her status this week when the Pac-10 Championships begin Thursday at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza.

Poleska represented Germany at Sydney two yeras ago and swam at last summer's World Championships too.

Second was Georgia's Ashley Roby (2:13.77) while third was Auburn's Laura Swander. Roby won the 100 breast last evening. Florida scored a sixth and seventh here.

The Gators returned to the victory stand via froshwoman Rebecca Harper's 1:55.97 pr in the 200 fly, yet another SEC meet record. The old mark: 1:56.67 by that incomparable Gator, Tracy Caulkins, from '83. Caulkins still holds the all-time SEC and Florida school record with her 1:55.55 that won NCAAs in '84 at Indianapolis, her final swim as a collegian.

The Gators also scored on a sixth by Diane Tennison, a seventh by Hawaii transfer (and South African Olympian Desiree DuPlessis, who was runner-up in the 100 fly); and Cara Teague's eighth.

That's 46 points right there for the Gators, so while winning's of course of paramount import, depth is a key element to any championship too.

Georgia broke its meet record in the final race, the 400 free relay, clocking 3:15.22. Their old record was 3:15.69 from last season, but Florida's third-place finish was enough to give the Gators the championship.

Williams' 48.61 leadoff and Auburn's Becky Short's 49.34 were the only sub 50.0 leadoff legs. Correia anchored in a swift 48 flat, the only other sub-49 split.

SEC Championshiup meets have a reputation for excellence and this year's women's competition was no exception.

They also have a reputation for leaving their swims in the pool, but don't tell that to Bauerle, whose 'Dawgs have won the last three NCAA Championships — the only SEC school besides Florida to accomplish this feat.

Many of Florida's top girls have never experienced the pressure of an NCAA Championship but they withstood Georgia's run at them here and Troy has a way of getting his swimmers to perform at their peak when the chips are down.

Austin will be interesting — that's for sure.
