The Gators jumped from sixth place in the women's race and fifth in the men's after the first day, to the top of the heap, as one siwmmer after another scored lifetime bests.

Sophomore Janelle Atkinson got things going for the Lady Gators by winning the 500 yard freestyle, leading a one-two-three Florida sweep. Atkinson clocked an automatic qualifying 4:42.88, followed by sophomore Sarah McLarty at 4:43.29 and Meredith Green in
4:43.55.

"I am so ecstatic right now," McLarty said. "Our coaches knew we could do it, our parents knew we could do and we just went out there and did it. We went to the pool with the mindset that nobody else but us was going to get into the top-three. We wanted it so bad there was no other option."

The Florida women continued to excel in the freestyle events as senior Leah Martindale took the bronze medal in the 50-yard free (22.65). Sophomore Chantal Gibney

The 200-yd. free relay team of Martindale, Gibney, senior Diane Tennison set a school record with their second-place finish (1:30.18).

The Florida men had an equally impressive night as their 200-yd. free relay team of also set a school record as they scored a gold in the event. Three swimmers scored in the championship finals of the 50-yd. free with senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) claimed the highest finish taking fourth (19.82). Freshman Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) won the silver in the 500-yard freestyle with his collegiate best of 4:20.28.

The Gators excelled in the 200-yard individual medley winning both top places. Senior Eric Donnelly (Sarasota, Fla.) won the event with his NCAA automatic time of 1:46.23. Also scoring an automatic was fellow senior Duncan Sherrard (Lakeland, Fla.) with his time of 1:46.30.

"This was as good a day as we could expect," head coach Gregg Troy said. "The women's one-two-three finish was outstanding. Sioui in the 500-yd. free was amazing. That was an event we thought we were going to be weak in and here he is taking an SEC medal. Everybody has really stepped up and performed amazingly this week."

Auburn received wins from Maggie Bowen, who set an SEC record of 1:56.51 in the 200 IM, and Kevin Clements. Clements won the 500 freestyle in 4:17.20, the nation's fastest time thus far this year. Bowen's time also ranks her as #1 this year, and is only one second off the American and NCAA record she set last March.

"Tonight started off great and ended up fast, just not the way we wanted it to," Auburn head coach David Marsh said.

Georgia rounded out the night's competition by adding another record to the list. The foursome of Stefanie Williams, Neka Mabry, Paige Kearns and Maritza Correia held off a tough Auburn team to win the women's 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.86. In doing so, the relay team set both an SEC and Georgia record. It is also the fastest time in the nation this year, with Auburn #2.

"I have to mention Ritz's — Maritza Correia's –spectacular performance," said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle, of Correia's anchor leg of 21.89 in the 200 free relay. "That is the fastest relay in the program, and we have had some great relays. It was a spectacular performance, and we needed it to win."

Just like Wednesday night's 800-yard freestyle relay, Georgia trailed Auburn going into the anchor, and Correia swam the fastest split of the race (1:44.28) to give the Lady Bulldogs the victory.

Correia also won the 50 today in an SEC record 22.31. The junior has now won SEC titles at every freestyle distance, from 50 to 1650 yards.

The Lady Gators hold first with 259.50 over defending national champion Georgia with 249.50. The men's team is just one point over No. 2 Auburn with 307. The last time UF won and SEC title was 1993 for the men and 1996 for the women. Action will continue through Saturday, Feb. 23.
