Zubero Retires

MADRID, SPAIN – Spanish swimmer Martin Zubero has retired. Zubero, 28, was Spain’s most successful swimmer, who came to prominence when he won the 200m backstroke at the 1991 World Championships.

He ensured his place in Spanish history by winning the same event a year later at the 1992 Olympic Games. Zubero finished his major championship career in August in front of home fans at the European Championships in Seville by winning his fourth European 100m backstroke gold medal.

At the time Zubero said he was doubtful about whether he would compete at the 1998 World Championships in Perth, Australia, in January. Zubero relayed his decision to leave the sport by emailing his Spanish club from his American home.
