NCAA Div. I: BYU Cougars Sweep Utes

PROVO, Utah, Feb. 8. THE BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished up the regular season with a sweep of in-state and MWC rival University of Utah, Friday.

The men's team won 10 of 13 events to beat the Ute squad 124-77. The men finish the 2001-02 season with a 7-1 record, losing only one dual meet in the past two seasons.

The women's squad won nine of 13 events to win 147-96, improving from a seven-point margin of victory in November. The women's team finish the season with an 8-3 record after winning the last five dual meets. The women's team has now defeated the University of Utah 14 straight times.

Junior Billy Betz won the 50 free with a time of 20.74 as BYU placed the first four places followed by Michael Mullen, Brian Sorensen, and James Bekker. Betz also won the 100 free and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team composed of Christopher Johnson, Adam Ware, and Gary Tan.

Tan won the 400 I.M. with a pool-record time of 3:59.82. The Olympian from Singapore also won the 500 free.

Junior Jeffery Mason won the 200 free while Johnson won the 100 back. The 200 free relay team of Mason, Sorensen, Brent Parker, and Michael Mullen won to
finish the meet.

"We swam really focused today," said men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "It was a highly competitive meet and we look forward for conference."

For the women, the 200 medley relay team of senior Tina Adkinson, Lyndi Juvan, Amanda Grant, and Nichole Burrows got things started off right, winning the event by a full two seconds with a time of 1:48.14.

All-American Cortnee Adams won the 100 and 200 free with times of 51.06 and 1:50.94. Junior Heidi Leitz won the 50 free with a time of 24.29 followed by sophomore teammate Jamie Lambert. Leitz also won
the 100 fly and led the winning 200 free relay team with Melissa Busby, Burrows, and Adams Burrows also won the 100 back posting a time of 58.37.

"We swam well, especially Adams and Leitz," said women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "We had a lot of confidence and Jamie Lambert is coming on very strong."

For the divers, junior Kelli Einfeldt won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. She was followed by senior Tessa Clark in both events, who dove in her last home meet of her career. Freshman Andy Bradley won the 1-meter event and junior Justin Wilcock won the 3-meter event.

Both teams will prepare for the MWC Conference Championships that run from February 28 through March 2 in Oklahoma City, OK.
