NCAA Div. I Men: Florida State Defeats LSU, Louisiana-Monroe

BATON ROUGE, La., Feb. 2. FLORIDA State University junior Nnamnse Ammons placed first in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles and the Seminoles won six of the day's 12 events to defeat Louisiana State, 128-109, and Louisiana-Monroe, 181-38, Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.

The win improves the Seminoles to 10-3 on the year, marking the first season since 1997 and the first under head coach Neil Harper, that the men have defeated 10 opponents.

The Seminoles, who received two votes in the latest national poll, also earned their first victory over an opponent ranked ahead of them with their defeat over LSU, which received eight votes.

Ammons won the 50 free by one-hundredth of a second over teammate Michael Paulus with a time of 20.91. Joey Marshburn and Matt Carmen finished third and fourth in the 50 free, respectively. It was much of the same for FSU in the 100 free, as Ammons out-touched Marshburn for first-place at 45.85.

Dominating the individual events was a common theme for the Seminoles. In the 200 individual medley, the Seminoles placed first through third, as Justin Betts led the way with the win at 1:52.88.

Again, in the 200 butterfly, FSU placed the top-three finishers with Devin Crock touching the wall first at 1:51.96. In the final event of the day, the 200 breaststroke, Wickus Nienaber and Betts finished one-two with times of 2:02.99 and 2:04.27, respectively.

Earlier in the meet, diver Louie Gagnet picked up a win for the Seminoles on the three-meter with a score of 335.85. Gagnet also earned a second-place finish on the one-meter, turning in a score of 290.55.

Today's meet was the last of dual meet action that the Seminoles will see this season. FSU will now concentrate on preparing for the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championship, which will be held on February 28, on the campus of Maryland University.
