West Valley Upsets Santa Clara and San Jose to Win Zone One South Champs

SAN JOSE, Jan. 17. HISTORY was made at the Zone One South Swimming Championships, which were held on January 12 & 13, 2002 at the George Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara, CA.

For the first time in more than two decades, the meet was won by a team other than Santa Clara or San Jose Aquatics. This year the winner was the West Valley Swim Club.

The Zone 1 South Championship (including over 20 United States Swimming teams from Santa Clara in the north to Hollister in the south, and from Santa Cruz to Salinas and Monterey) has been contested for over 20 years. In those 20 years, no team other than San Jose Aquatics (now SVAA) and Santa Clara Swim Club has placed in the top two positions. These perennial powers have traded the championship for two decades. Both of these teams have also won Far Western championships and National championships over the years.

This year, the world of California swimming was rocked by the insurgence of a new swim club; home-grown, community based, family-friendly West Valley Swim Club. West Valley prides itself on being focused,
first and foremost, on the kids.

The meet went down to the last relay and finished as follows:

West Valley Swim Club 1461
Santa Clara Swim Club 1454.5
SVAA (formerly San Jose Aquatics) 1241
