Updated NCAA Division I – Top 25 Times Posted

While many college students were taking advantage of winter break with trips to see family and friends, swimmers in Division I competition were in exotic locales including Barbados, Hawaii and even Mexico to continue training for the NCAA Championships, looming just three months away. And the CSCAA/Speedo Top 25 Ranking list kept up with all the doings.

Not all the time was taken up with training, however. Arizona State, to mention one example, was very busy with meets over the holiday. On Dec. 29, the Sun Devils hosted the University of Washington, with ASU's women winning 177-119 and its mens team victorious over the Huskies 208-80. ASU then hosted the University of British Columbia Jan. 4 and defeated the Vancouver team 128-74 for the women and 127-72 for the men. The next day, ASU hosted the Sun Devil Invitational, a non-scoring meet for teams training in the Tempe area. The 5th-ranked ASU men defeated 12th-ranked Michigan 132-111. Michigan's Dan Ketchum now holds the 10th spot in the 200 free with his 1:37.61 at that meet. Arizona State's men's team now boasts a 5-0 dual meet record, the first time since 1990-91 that the squad has posted a five-straight winning streak.

A "little" rain and snow didn't stop Georgia and Alabama from holding a phone dual meet Jan. 4. The Bulldogs won both portions of the meet (165-30 women, 117-85 men). Georgia's Robert Margalis posted the fastest time ever swum by a Georgia swimmer in the 1000 free (8:57.28), and is second in the nation as a result. Teammate Ashley Roby has the fourth-fastest time in the 200 breast (2:12.51).

Florida's men's and women's teams defeated Penn State in their dual meet Jan. 5. The men scored 126 points to Penn State's 111; the women's score was equally close (128-111). Floridians Carlos Jayme swam to two eighth-place rankings in this edition (50 free, 20.23; 100 free, 44.20r), and Meredith Green's 16:28.09 effort in the 1650 free also was good for eighth in that event.

Binghamton University, a Division I school which competes in the Atlantic East Conference, picked up a new recruit for the winter swim season and not just any recruit either. Her name is Qu Yun, and she swam for China in the 1996 Olympics, finishing fourth in the 200 meter fly (2:10.26) and second in both flys at the 1994 World Championships. She sent a mass e-mail to over 150 Division I head coaches. Coach Benji DeMotte responded and began communicating over the next six months. The result: Qu competed at the Florida Atlantic and can boast a 2:00.77 in the 200 yard fly. She should do much better as the season progresses.

The next edition of the Speedo/CSCAA Top 25 list will be published Tuesday, Jan. 22. Times should be e-mailed to JudyJ@swiminfo.com, or faxed to 928-284-2477 no later than noon Mountain time Monday, Jan. 21. Times are posted on both swiminfo.com and cscaa.org.
